why silence is golden

Today is Monday.  That means Monday morning prayer group and  it has meant that for the past 15 years of my life.   A group of woman meet at a friends house sit in a circle, bow our heads and pray.  Sometimes silently!  We are comfortable with the silence, in fact, we embrace it.  Can you  imagine a group of women gathered together being quiet? After a weekend?  Craving  silence may have been born out of a house filled with eight fighting kids and all their friends. But that is not the case now...because now I  understand  to be still and quiet and go inside ourselves is a beautiful thing!   Try and tell that to a teenager.  Radical ! They are bombarded with distractions..they listen to the radio on the bus ride to school!   At 6;45 am!   The noise never stops and the distractions never stop,  it is the expected lifestyle. It  takes a  purposeful effort to change those habits.  All they are missing! Kids, though, WANT to  hear and think about this stuff.  They  don't blow me off when I  extol  the power of prayer, the power of thinking, the power of silence.  Crazy, really, but they listen! I was telling them how they have to carve time daily to  meditate...and a good way would be to start first thing in the morning.  Then,  cleaning my sons room, I  saw  a note, scotched taped  over  his alarm clock  "pray first."..... I knew, he knew .
