When Your 11 Year Old Cooks Breakfast

This past weekend the13 year old taught the 11 year old how to make scrambled eggs....demonstrated how to use cooking spray, a little bit of butter and 3 eggs for a wonderful plate of eggs!  And so,  Monday after school the 11 year old wants to make more eggs (he is the only one who doesn't have practice right after school) I told him OK, but he can't use the stove unless me or Dad are  home and he has to clean up when he is finished.  He is agreeable to this. Tuesday same thing..he made more eggs after school.   He is smug now with his  culinary skills.  He decided he wants to get up 15 minutes early Wed and make eggs for breakfast ."  Aren't you kind of getting tired of eggs? "  "No, not all, I love them. " I have minimal  interest in getting up early so he can cook more eggs, but my husband said he would be awake so that would be OK.   At 5;45am the 11 year old is in the kitchen cracking 3 eggs in his little greased frying pan.... the two other brothers get up and smell those yummy eggs...they come downstairs and say, "Hey! Can we have some? "  The chef realizes he is in demand now and tries to make enough for his brothers and adds 12 more eggs to the little greased pan.  The dad who is supervising is shaving in the bathroom, and I am  asleep.  All those runny eggs overflowed and no one  had any idea what to do. Dad has to come with shaving cream all over his face and fix the mess.  I am still sleeping, the three boys apparently are just standing there watching.  My husband ended up cooking  the 3 boys eggs and cleaning everything up before I ever even knew about it....No one mentioned a single word to me about breakfast...and can you believe I just bought 24 more eggs?  It really is a zoo.

  2. Ha! Sounds familiar. We only have four kids and our house feels like a zoo most times. Nice the hubby handled it - I envisioned mom being drug out of bed at 6am to clean up and make eggs. :-)

  4. To wake you up would be to admit he couldn't handle it - therefore he would have "egg on his face"! Next dad has to teach them how to crack the egg open with one hand - then just chuck the shell in the garbage. Then introduce them to fried eggs and show them how to flip the eggs in the pan without breaking the yoke! I still remember my dad doing that one Sat morning - he had skill...

  7. LOL That is such a cute story! I love the fact that your son is showing independence in the Kitchen:). My house rule for my 15 year old for cooking is that he is allowed to cook , as long as I am at home. When I leave the house its microwave only! LOL

  15. What a great story! I think it is awesome that your eleven year old son is loving cooking. He must be so excited that he can make his own breakfast (and cook for others in small numbers). :) This sounds like a family memory that will be talked about for years to come!

  16. Hey Ann,

This is too funny - I can picture their excitement in such a delicious breakfast, but then the ensuing mess I'm sure wasn't pretty!

What a nice DH to clean it all up AND let you sleep while doing it!!!

  19. My son also cannot get tired of eggs. Cooking 12 eggs at one go... looks like you'll need a bigger frying pan for your new chef. Maybe need to invest in some chickens too to lay a never ending supply of eggs for your son. Heheheh.

  21. My two sons are obsessed with eggs right now. I am always having to make fried or scrambled eggs and they are super skinny so they apparently burn them right off :)
