20 Reasons Why I Am Different

I am seeing how out of touch with our culture I really am!  I will tell you what I mean by this.
1. I had zero interest in the half time super bowl show.   Madonna has no meaning to my life and I have no interest in her outfits or acrobatics.
2. I am not concerned about what kind of car I drive or what other people drive.  I will be happy driving a mini van all my life.  I want a car that gets me to my destination.  Expensive, high performance vehicles are silly to me.
3. I buy most of my make up at the Dollar Store.  I  look at the fancy expensive alluring ads with airbrushed people on them..but just can't convince myself the paint is worth the impossible attempt to look like that..
4.  I have never  been to a beautician or salon.  I use the cheapest hair dye I can find and make a mess most of the time and the perfect finish never once happened..but I cant bring myself to spend time or money sitting in a chair for a hair style that will last 3 weeks.
5.  I have never had my nails done.   I have no desire for the obstruction of fake nails when I have so much work to do using my own nails.
6. I don't watch TV.  If I see it it reaffirms my choice without exception.
7. I would rather cook than go out to a restaurant.   My food is healthier and tastes better.  I eat white processed bread.
8. I don't want to hear gossip about the neighbor's kids.
9. I would marry my husband again.  I would rather be with him than any other person.
10.  I love silence.
11. I still have the same purse I had 5 years ago..with my wallet, coupon book and lip gloss in it.  Same stuff I had in it 10 years ago.  I have never seen or missed seeing a coach purse.
12.  I think.
13. I am pro life without exception.
14. I don't like to read what is on the New York Times best seller list...I love the classics and historical fiction and would read nonstop if I didn't have other responsibilities. I am not attracted to any form of pop culture .
15. I believe in Jesus and the precepts in the Nicene Creed.
16. I have no desire to be a homeroom mom or organize class parties.  The same kids are here most of the time anyway, and I know how the kids interact.
17.  I believe parents are the primary educators of their children and school is meant only to compliment their learning.
18. I believe chastity is possible.
19. I say what I mean.  I don't have any hidden meanings with my words.   No one ever has to ask, "What does she mean by that?" because it means just what I said.  No games.
20. 8 kids.  Straight A's.   No braces.

  1. i love #16 &17 they ring very true to me and #20 is VERY impressive ;-)

  2. I am not with you on all of them. But at least about half. 9 & 10 - I agree fully

  3. I love the list and you are not alone on a lot of these! I agree with the person above... #20 is super awesome!

  4. Thanks for following my blog. I'm your newest follower. I'm with you...I think cars are big money pits and if I loved in a city where I didn't need one I would totally go car-less. When we have more kids we'll get a mini van. They are cheaper than an SUV and way easier to get kids in and out of!

  5. Almost everything you said is also true for me. LOL

  6. Hi there, Great post and so many things I'm on board with you over. I was unimpressed by Madonna and the half time show. I homeschooled my two daughters and loved it, although we didn't start from kdg. I cried each time they had to go back to school. I am proud to say that it is possible for kids to remain chaste-both my girls did, in fact the oldest daughter was kissed for the first time when she got engaged. Have a delightful day!

  7. A lot of people would agree with most of your list. I don't buy any make up - Dollar Store or otherwise !!!

    God bless.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I have to say that the dollar store makeup can still be pretty good! I buy stuff there a lot and it's just the same stuff that's in the stores like Walmart & Target! Why spend more when you can spend $1?!

    ReplyDelete
  9. I completely agree with your list! So refreshing to find like-minded ladies.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I loved this! I feel the same way about Madonna and many other points you made. Though I love make up and sometimes get my hair done (haven't been to a salon in 18 months, I really, desperately need a good haircut and will be getting one soon I am sure).
#9 is my favorite, goes without saying :-D

  11. I thought I was the only one that shop at the dollar store for make-up! LOL Love your post Hon and have a wonderful Monday:)

  12. Love your list. A lot of it is true. I especially like the comment about how schools are ment to compliment what parents teach their kids. That is a big soap box of mine. I can't stand how parents would rather be friends with their kids then be a parent. I also would rather cook then go out to eat.

  13. No Braces...Impressive! I agree on most. We don't even have a TV in our house.

  14. I think I`m most of those already.

  17. love it! I was just thinking of some of these things. Like dying your hair, I haven't done that in so long and I save so much money. What is makeup? Number 20 is extremely impressive! And I was wondering if you have any animals?

  18. You have a wonderful list. It shows the truth of the verse, "They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world."

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm not with you on everything, but in many ways you and I are so much alike. I love silence too! I thought I was the only one lol. I also could care less about Madonna or make up or fancy cars. #20, well you have all the reason in the world to be super proud! Way to go there!

  20. I like your list. I really like #9 and #13.

  22. I agree with almost your entire list. I love that my husband can be a "room mom" though, because it shows our daughter that he is involved and cares. He shows in other ways, but she gets a kick out of it. #20 is amazing. :) I am with you specifically I #1, 9, 14,15, and 17-20. Love your blog! 23. Great list.....I agree... I don't dye my hair, I've never been to a beauty salon or had my nails done etc, and some of my clothes I've had for 30 years!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree with the majority of your list and am so glad to find someone who thinks similar and is not worried about telling it like it is!
Good for you...obviously it is staying true to these thoughts that bring you satisfaction and happiness...thanks for sharing!

  25. I'm perhaps not as brave as you are but I totally admire someone like yourself who can tell it how it really is, no frills! I bet you sleep well at night!!

  28. You and I agree on all things, however, I have dabbled in the nails and get my hair trimmed maybe once every other year professionally and foodnetwork is my favorite channel....

sounds like a meme to me! I'll keep it going, thanks for the idea!

:) and you are unique :-D

  30. I work for a pop radio station and I can tell you, not that you need confirmation, you are so right not to care about pop culture. I am amazed at the depravity of lyrics and lifestyles of "artists" who are looked up to or emulated. Because I work there, I am conscious of and exposed to many pop culture things, however, I AM blessed to be able to speak frankly to co-workers about my faith and a different way of living life. I will say the one thing I found impressive about 53 year old Madonna was her ability to do a deep knee squat in high-heeled boots - hurt my thighs just to watch it lol.

    ReplyDelete
  31. In our area Dollar Tree is a very popular store and it really makes sense to shop there and save. I was very impressed with your list and hope you will stay with all 20.

    ReplyDelete
  32. What a fabulous list! I especially LOVE # 19 ;)

  34. Thanks for following me! Followed back!

I like these! I have never had my nails done either, only because its too expensive to get them done or I am just to lazy to fool with doing them on my own

  35. mostly we are very comparable except I vary rarely eat process anything. I had to remove it from Johnny's diet and it was just easier to remove from the whole house.

Being Catholic is the best thing that God could have given me. And my life has not been all pink teddy bears and purple roses. I give Him credit where credit is due. My two healthy boys and I kind man that I love to heal me and make me who I am today. God is truly good.

    awesome list,
One day I will be brave enough to make my own.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think it is TOTALLY admirable to NOT be in touch with our culture!!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I agree with many items on your list but #14 really stood out to me because that always made me feel like I was born in the wrong century! And #20 leaves me speechless. You should write a book. Seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  38. wow! very impressive...So many points of yours are inspiring.. you are brave and to able to carry on..being you is commendable indeed:)

    1. I like your comment about chastity because I do believe that it is still possible to teach and help our daughters to remain pure but when I say to other moms that my daughters will not be on the pill they roll their eyes at me and one even told me. "you can't help teenagers have sex, they'll have it anyways." ugh! Chastity worked for me and I know it can for my girls.

  44. This sounds a lot like me. I never get my nails, hair done. My cars are always used one and I buy my makeup at the dollar store too. I don't try to keep up with others on a car. This is a great post. I love to stop by and read your post they are very meaningful. Have a great day (:

  51. It's awesome to be different. It's even more awesome to admit it to the world that you are. My oldest daughter who's 13 is so much the same way and I'm so proud of her. Her friends are now into makeup and all that girls her age get into and for a few years now she's always asked why do I have to do that because my friends are? and I say "You don't have to." When you want to do something, do it because you feel you are ready to do it not because your friends say its cool and you should. Way to go and being you!

    ReplyDelete
  52. 8 kids! Wow. I'm a fan of yours already!

It certainly is okay to be different. The world wouldn't be very exciting if we were all the same.

  60. 4, 5 10, 11, 17 I'm totally with you on. Some of the others I'm mostly with you on. A few I'm not with you on. That's why we're all made different.

    ReplyDelete
  61. In quite a few ways we are very near the same. In a few we are quite different, as you say. That's perfect! I couldn't really fathom a world where everybody thought the same...

    Thanks for inviting me over.

    I'm glad I came!!!

  62. I'm the same as you on 75% of these. The only ones that I differ on are 3 (I get mine from WalMart), 4 (I get my hair cut every 7 weeks at a hair salon)), 5 (I had my nails done once in my 40s, twice in my 50s, but never again...I'll be 64 on Saturday), 6 (my husband wants me to watch tv with him in the evenings) and 20 (3 kids, all valedictorians, no braces). Great post!

  66. Your values are very much mine. This post could have been written by me. Although I do have my hair done by a professional 2x a year, went totally gray early. Touch myself the rest of the time. Too cheap, plus I hate the time it takes to sit there and get it done. I do wear artificial nails, hate them, but on a low dose chemo for life and they don't tear my skin when I scratch and then infection sets in. Hate the cost, and the upkeep. 9 pregnancies 3 living kids, all A's and yes braces!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Just re-read my above post and it should read Touch-up myself. You are probably reading this saying what kind of a nut is she?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Wait--you mean you watched the super bowl? lol! Husband had it on..I read and watched a couple of the commercials.

    ReplyDelete
  69. What I have in common with you - 1, 6-18. That's a lot!!

  70. Your babies are very lucky to have a mama with such good morals and values!!! What an inspiration you are!

    ReplyDelete
  71. I think you missed humble and tolerant but maybe not. Also, number 7, eating processed white bread and eating health: contradiction of terms.

You come across as self-righteous and arrogant. Be careful here. God has a way of knocking people off their high horses.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Wow! Lots of interesting stuff about you! Haha. I love having my nails done. lol.

    ReplyDelete
  73. All the same except #7 and #20. I like restaurants and (so far) two of my four have had braces ('twas necessary).

Maybe I will steal this post and write my own 20 things! Looks like fun! ;)

  74. What Madonna did the half time show? :) Just kidding and like you I could have cared a less. We were visiting friends that day and everyone, I mean everyone stopped what they were doing just to watch her. There are many of items on your list, I'd have to say sound just like me.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I didn't even watch the superbowl until my husband came home from work... lol! So I watched the last quarter...

  91. This week in Australia, we had a boy band called One Direction tour. Until this week I had never heard of them. I am proud to say that. I only heard about them when I watched the 7pm ABC TV broadcast (no ads).
I dislike the way just about every young girl I see has straightened and coloured hair, fake nails, and a spray tan. They are like an army of clones....don't get me started. I never allowed my kids to do anything un-supervised until they left high school. I hung about over their shoulder when on the internet and knew all their friends well. I did not care when they told me that such and such was allowed to do something so why couldn't they....they never tried that much anyhow. I stuck my nose in their business and guess what? They are well turned out young adults, 25 and 28 respectively. They tell me what a good job I did and so do others. They only have one mother and it's my job to do the right thing by them. End of rant for now.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Except for the not watching t.v. part, we have a lot in common!! Oh, and the salon thing. Who cuts your hair? I color my own but I can't cut my own!

    ReplyDelete
  93. Boy! Do we have a lot common! except for # 4! I love to get my hair cut and I love a new purse. BUT! they are so darn expensive I can't bring myself to buy a new one. . .really it's way on sale!

  100. Thank you for stopping at my place and leaving a comment, and becoming a foloower. I like your list...I thought I was the only one in the world that does not care about pop culture..french manicures, status symbols et all...Thank you. I'm of very simple nature, and it those things which really do capture my heart..they are the best. I will watch tv, on PBS, cooking mainly...and painting. No news, no tv shows...unless I can find something from the 50's Andy Griffith :)...Love that Aunt Bee..with her pearls. 102. Hello, I stopped by your site from melomama blog hop.

I appreciate your post. I have struggled with how different I am in this internet world.

I don't wear makeup, style my hair and I wear a headcovering. I dress only in modest dresses and dress my daughters the same way. I am pro-life, pro-family, and pro doing things that give and lead to life instead of death.

I home-school, home-make and home-love, although I do like to get out of the house on occasion:-)

There are other things I wish I did, but I am not prefect yet:-)

Compared to most of the first world, I live a simple life. But every time I learn more about the second and third world, I have to humble myself and look for ways to simplify more.

    ReplyDelete
  103. 13, 17 and 18 - yes! I taught abstinence ed. to high schoolers for 12 years, and they embraced it. Especially the girls. They didn't know they had an option, sadly. Today's standards are so low and lazy, no wonder so many kids are floundering. I agree w/ so much of what you wrote here. you go, girl!

    ReplyDelete
  104. I always marvel when people will argue with #18. Why is it so hard to believe that chastity is possible? It is possible for girls as well as guys. It's a huge relief for many young people to know it's okay NOT to be sexually active until it's appropriate. It's a crazy world.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Loved reading your list! I often feel like I don't fit in this time period or world for that matter. I don't think that I ever will and that's okay... not until I'm really home.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I agree with some things, disagree with others, and completely love you!!

    ReplyDelete
  107. A girl after my own heart. There are only a couple on your list that I disagree with. I have been told I am living on another planet. However, cutting my own hair is something I would not attempt as I have butchered it in the past.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I love how definite and bold you are with your beliefs and opinions - and there are SO many people on the same page with you! You are not so different after all. I'm thinking we are VERY different - and yet there is STILL some common ground:) There is nothing wrong with chastity and I'm sure it's very possible - I'm jut not so sure it's the most fun way go... just saying.
