Do You Belong to a Subculture?
We first noticed this idea when our family rented an RV and went to Canada. We met many people who live in RV's. We had no idea so many people did this! Made us think about the Florida snow birds. Then we started to think of other groups....daily communicants, writers, volunteers, marathon runners, military families, travel sports teams....practice ALL year round with tournaments every other weekend in the off seasons. More than a hobby, or a job, it is like a culture with members who share a common passion for what they do. A way of life. Do you belong to a subculture?

Very interesting question. I do belong to a couple of subcultures: English teachers, people who have lost lots of weight, etc. Great thing to think about-
ReplyDeleteI think so, book readers :)
ReplyDeleteHappily, a few. I'm a reader, blogger, attend services regularly and am active in my synagogue.
ReplyDeletehmmm, yes I guess I do, but I have never really thought about it!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely, I think most people belong to multiple subcultures. Sometimes even sub-subcultures...
ReplyDeletevery interesting post, i believe i am apart of a subculture... blogger and proud of it ;-)
ReplyDeleteNow I don't know lol
ReplyDeleteDo I?
Yes, I am a runner, mother, military wife, and my husband drag races, so we travel for that too. Though most times I feel like I don't really fit into any of my subcultures. Do you ever feel like that?
ReplyDeleteWow... This is a great question. I guess I belong to a few: Photographers, Indie Crafters, Former punk rock kids turned parents, Bookstore employees, bloggers and wanna be writers are a few. My newest one would be Weight Watchers. Suddenly I feel very popular.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea od former punk kids who have become parents being a sub-culture!! I'm with you there!!
DeleteYes, I do belong to a subculture; Christianity. It is so amazing to meet, on line, other believers around the world and we all agree on and practice Christianity. Living in an ongoing relationship with Jesus Christ.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
<><
I so agree, our sermon yesterday was on unity amongst Christians and I love that when you meet other Christians you always have something in common- Christ!
DeleteBook readers, scrapbookers, and when we traveled from NY to AZ to settle when I was a child, my folks had bought a RV to travel across the US and get to our final home! So we were in a different campground every night (most times in a different state each night)...until we reached AZ!!! It was probably the BEST summer I have ever had!
ReplyDeleteInteresting: Near my brother's home in Texas, there is a RV park where residents live part of the year, and then migrate to other climates the other part of the year. One can even rent an RV there. I have thought about trying a rental during the cold months. Maybe...maybe not!
DeleteI'm a blogger, a teenager, a golfer, a student... the list goes on and on! What a fun concept to consider!:)

i belong to newspaper journalists, bloggers, food and exercise lovers.
ReplyDelete:)
I too belong to a sub-culture. I'm a blogger, cloth diaper junky, and I run a mommy play group, Oh and I like to eat food- so a foodie.
ReplyDeleteHello.. I am a new blogger, mother of two..one 3year old boy and and 14year old daughter.. Yes 10 years apart and the love of my life!! My family consist of mother and 3 other sisters.. all women and this one little boy.. you can say he is spoiled!! You visited my blog today and would like to thank you for stopping by.. Love all visitors. Very nice meeting you and I read some of your post, very nice.. see you soon..Shari
ReplyDeleteAfter my Sunday post, I'd say my subculture might be intelligent people. There are so few of us...
ReplyDeleteoh yeah, i am in the subversive subculture...i have a mohawk and write poetry...what did you expect...ha
DeleteI think it the nature of humans (and maybe most animals) to gather with others of their kind. Makes real sense. Why would a duck want to hang out with a polar bear?? Same is true of people. Someone who belongs to no sub-culture would be a very isolated, reclusive, and probably very lonely person.
ReplyDeleteWhen my girls were younger, they were dancers and we traveled all over connecting with others that belong to this subculture. I think you are part of different subcultures depending on your stage of life, but I clearly remember the "dance world" subculture very clearly and yet...fondly.
ReplyDeletei think everyone belongs to a subculture, whether they realize it or not (i just thought about if after you asked it). as for me, it might be film-maker.
ReplyDeleteYes, I belong to several. First is the bloggy thing! I also do the art thing. I'm an artist and I go to class every single week enjoying the company of fellow artists and friends. The Hubby would have to say his dance classes (blech). I read too and that I share with my friends and the "WORLD" so there ya go! Interesting for sure.
ReplyDeleteBloggers come to mind immediately. xo
ReplyDeleteI think a sub-culture means something different over here. If I belong to anything it is the Lord Jesus Christ.
ReplyDeleteYes I guess I do belong to a subculture of crafters. Not everyone is accepting of men who do the types of crafts I do. Not very men crochet and make their own greeting cards. If I wanted acceptance, (and at my age, who cares?) I would do heavy metal sculpture or woodworking.
ReplyDeleteI am also a Christian, a reader and a singer of songs. And I guess you could include blogging.
Oh yeah, I forgot one definite subculture. Widower. How could I forget that! It's a lonely place, but time is helping.
DeleteThanks for Following me at http://angelicragect.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI am now Following you as well!! Yeah! :)
I would say that I belong to quite a few subcultures.
ReplyDeleteThank you SO MUCH for following my blog! I just gave you a shout out on my blog because you are my 400th follower! I'm following you back.
Expect to hear from me again! Take care.

ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting my blog, I'm now following you on GFC and Bloglovin' ;)
Is hermit blob considered a subculture?
ReplyDeleteI do belong to a sub-culture but hadn't thought about it. Actually, I also could say I belong to several. Wife, Mother, Christian, Writer, Playwright, just to name a few.
ReplyDeleteI definitely belong to a subculture as well as a different culture. I'm still trying to adapt living in America but there are lots of things that unite -being loving parents, enjoying knowledge and a good book, faith.
ReplyDeleteI have never look at it that way.
ReplyDeleteGreat post.
~Jazmin
If bloggers are a subculture, then I guess the answer is yes.
ReplyDeleteI never thought of it this way, but you are right. Would our church qualify? Although it is more like a family and a way of life...
ReplyDeletethanks for this thought-provoking post. subcultures tend to be based around common interests, hobbies, beliefs, professions, age, etc.
ReplyDeletei definitely belong to a subculture like everyone else.
have a great remainder of your weekend.
Yes, we are vegan .
ReplyDeleteJane x
A new and refreshing way to look at things. I suppose I belong to the sub-culture of blogging, and the sub-sub culture of posting daily. :)
ReplyDeleteBlessings to you!
sometimes I feel like our church family is a sub-culture, which is a shame really. we should be out and involved in our community more. not segregating ourselves from it. that doesn't seem to speak of love. So for 2012 - we are trying to build better bridges. not to "recruit" them or anything - but to just give help and show love where it is needed.
ReplyDeleteother than that - yeah, cops families tend to really bond together. no one other wife knows the absolute terror of seeing a police cruiser pull into your driveway when your spouse is on the night shift. Or why you'd beat the living snot out of said spouse when he exists that cruiser.....because he forget his badge at home.
um yeah...farmers...I'm sure we are a subculture, been crying since we lost all our tomatoes and peppers...but we'll replant

Law enforcement family, and I live in the south so being catholic seems to be a bit of a sub culture, gardener and caner, blogger for sure, a person whose only been married once....
ReplyDeleteYes- bloggers! :) Also, writers...
ReplyDelete~Jess
Interesting topic! I probably could belong to more than one subculture! Lol
ReplyDeletebeach obsessed
ReplyDeleteI am at the beach a lot because I have close family there, but an RV would be amazing, and I could travel north where it is cooler!
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday.

intersting question not sure i have an answer
ReplyDeleteGonna have to think about it long and hard. I definitely belong to subcultures just how many is the question for me.
ReplyDeleteYep! genus: Old people - sub-genus: Grumpy Old Men (G.O.M's) - variant genus: Idiot intolerant!
ReplyDeleteLoL!
This reminded me of when I lived on the east coast and one of my friends' family had one of those silver Airstream trailers. They'd take it up to Prince Edward Island in Canada every summer - along with TONS of other people who all had Airstreams. It was a gigantic Airstream Jamboree every summer - lots of kids and lots of fun!
ReplyDeleteYes, we have a boat and an RV, so we belong to the boaters sub-culture, and the campers...I am a blogger, an aspiring artist, a professional hobbyist photographer, grandmother, retired...so many! Never thought about it before...thanks for the question!
ReplyDelete(i'm a country hermit... shhh. don't tell anyone)
ReplyDeleteBlogging!
ReplyDeleteI think blogging for sure just like Carrie said.

Some Aussie retirees buy 4wds and caravans then travel around Australia, i guess you could it a sub-culture :-).
ReplyDeleteI belong to blogging, reading, church.
ReplyDeleteMy parents own a motorhome or as you would call it a RV but they don't live in it they use it when they go on holidays but they are never gone longer then 6 weeks because the miss the family when they are gone........That said when they have been away they have met people who do live in their motorhomes or caravans and spend all their time traveling it is not something I could do.....
ReplyDeleteNot really - have a great night :)
ReplyDeleteI like to do different things but not really with a group - lol
Yes, I guess you could say I am of the subculture of Traveling Fastpitch Softball! We enjoy it SO much and have our Softball family that we spend lots of time with! I never thought of it this way! Have a blessed evening dear friend, HUGS!
ReplyDeleteI, too, am in a subculture, Christianity, as someone else mentioned. I enjoy "meeting" other followers of Jesus Christ in the blogging community. My husband and I are quite involved with our church and the Gideons International. I'm also in the "grandparents" subculture...love it!
ReplyDeleteMaybe ... a subculture of woman who love house cleaning. :-)
ReplyDeleteI'd say Soccer Players, Runners, and Bloggers!
ReplyDeleteInteresting post. For me, it's writers, gaming geeks, and geocachers.
ReplyDeleteHm - not sure, are hobby photographers part of a subculture? Immigrants? If so, then I am.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I nominated you for the Sunshine Blog Award on my blog.
Yes surfing skating culture...Although our children are a bright light in this subculture.
ReplyDeletethanks so much for visiting and commenting on my blog, I always love your comments and compliments on my artwork. We did get a great amount of terrific submissions to this week's APR.
ReplyDelete...and yes, I totally belong to a subculture, that of artists. I'm always amazed to find that I've been talking to a good friend of a friend I've met on the internet chellenges, to see the interconnections across not only the blogosphere but the actual planet is quite amazing.
I've been in and out of many subcultures over the years - Mennonites, La Leche League, foster parents, Charismaniacs, swim team parents, music teachers... Now I'm in the grandmas-still-making a difference subgroup.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine myself living that kind of life. I'm more like a settle-down-here kind of person and do the occasional travellings.
ReplyDeleteI guess I would have to confess to belonging to a subculture of people that chase waterfalls. Betsy and I are always trying to find waterfalls we haven't seen before.
ReplyDeleteEveryone belongs to a subculture {and most likely several subcultures} - whether they realize it or not! You and I, for example, share a subculture of blogging ;) And isn't it a fun one!?
ReplyDeleteHi There, Very interesting post...We are not RV people --but have friends who are.. AND--they meet friends from all over the country who are RVers....
ReplyDeleteBloggers are sorta a 'subculture' don't you think??? I have so many new and wonderful friends through blogging. And what is even better is getting to meet some of these new friends...
George and I love to hike and find waterfalls. We've met lots of people along our way who have the same interests... Guess there are subcultures all over the place!!!!
Have a great week.
Hugs,
Betsy
Hi thanks for visiting my blog. Yes I do believe i belong to a subculture too. :)
ReplyDeleteI have a lot, because I have a lot of activities. Like blogging, line dancing, buddhist, fitness freak, and yoga.
ReplyDeletebig yes. lol. goth for me. but then again im sure everyone belongs to some kind of subculture too, and then we're the 'blogger-subculture', we spend a LOT of time on blogspot, tumblr or whatsoever :-P
ReplyDeleteI think I am part of the working moms subculture. One that isn't really happy about it. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting thought! I had never really thought about this before, but I think everybody does, even if they don't realise it.
ReplyDeleteMe? New Zealanders, teachers, atheists, people with renal failure, university-educated women etc...
Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment! Yes, I think we all belong to sub-cultures, whether we think about it or not. First of all, I belong to Jesus Christ, who gave his life for our sins! I am a Blogger, FaceBooker, and Photographer.
ReplyDeleteYes I do! Thanks for the visit and comment! have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI sure do think it's a way of life for all of us. We all tend to be involved with those who share love and passion for similar interest.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week.

ReplyDeleteand i spent more time in hotels than at home.
I think we all belong to subcultures to some degree.
ReplyDeleteWe have an RV -- LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping by and leaving a comment. I have become a new follower.
ReplyDeleteWe used to do the RV scene in our younger years.
Now I guess I am a sub-culture to Christ,family and blogging,reading.
I'm in the Special Needs subculture, and within that, there are sub-subcultures. I have a son with autism and a daughter with Down syndrome. Both of those subcultures are VERY different. You'd be surprised. The Down syndrome group is competitive and gets easily frustrated over words. The Autism group fights a lot are TOUGH. They both are also SUPER FANTASTIC.
ReplyDeleteIf there's one for a mother of all boys, then yes, I do. In fact, I may be the president of that little culture. :)
ReplyDeleteYes! I have a bunch of subculters in my life. All seperate from each other, but very much important to my life!
ReplyDeleteI don't know what a RV is and the word subculture was also unknown to me. I googled and found out that these could be punks ,stoners, goths, jocks, bisexuals, puritans, cults, clans etc. I decided not to like this word at all. A "sub" culture ?
ReplyDeleteWhat is culture anyway, many countries have other cultures.
As long as one behaves correctly to me he can be everything !

We used to take summer vacations in our RV when the kids were younger, and you are definitely right that is a subculture. I had a neigbhor a couple of years ago sell their home and retire to life on the road. I can't imagine, living in that small of space. I like my home without wheels on it.
ReplyDeleteBTW...I love the style of your blog posts. Short and concise. Nothing I do is concise...always long winded.
Yep, we were a military family for almost fifteen years (five of those with our oldest son). Since my hubby retired last October after 22 years of service, I have to say I truly miss it. :)
ReplyDeleteI guess everyone belongs to a subculture when you think about it. I do based on what my job is. And I'm sure I belong to others as well. Interesting question.
ReplyDeleteI love finding those little subcultures too (don't think we will ever be a member of the RV one though as we're too lazy) Expats in the Bay Area, women who wear prints, not sure of mine...
ReplyDeleteHaving relationships online is like a sub-culture. My husband doesn't really get it, when I talk about Kirsten from the States or Bethany from Vancouver... And the daughter with her boyfriend she has never met [but will very soon]. Interesting...
ReplyDeleteNever thought about it but I do not. Perhaps some day. We seem to be too busy trying something different every month. Although, now that I think of it, my husband plays golf at least once a week - sometimes 3 - with a regular group and we occasionally dine at the club - we are members. He could be part of a subculture, right?
ReplyDeleteI used to. I used to be a military wife. I used to be Mormon. Now I'm a college student which I guess is a subculture. But not as defined or unique as an RVer! (I'm sure that's not what they call themselves?)
ReplyDeleteI can't think of anything, and now I'm utterly scared that I am boring!! Will obviously ponder on this all night and try to think of things that make me interesting :) Thanks for the thought-fodder ;)
ReplyDeleteNever tought of that
ReplyDeleteThe one that immediately comes to mind is of course Blogging !
ReplyDeleteI think I lot of us commenting belong to that one. =)
I guess I do. Several, actually.

Is blogging a subculture?
ReplyDeleteWhen I was part of an art guild my art was very different from the other artist style of art. So I guess I would say my art style. I think I could also add blogging and my new found blogger friends. Some people just do not understand it. Definitely not mainstream.
ReplyDeleteNeat post
ReplyDeleteNot sure that I'm in any particular cultural grouping, but the idea of being able to move your home as often as you'd like is sure appealing.
ReplyDeleteI am sure that most of us do. I hope you had a good trip.
ReplyDeleteDoes being a grandmom count. Among my closest friends, a few are not yet part of that group and though they are most excited about our little ones, I know they eagerly wait their turn.
ReplyDeleteInteresting, I never thought about belonging to a subculture.
ReplyDeleteLOL I'm smiling at LDH comment, does being Nana count?
ReplyDeleteI'm a nana too, so I guess we just created our own. :)
DeleteBoating. We had a boat when we lived in MD and there is a whole world happening on the water we were not a part of until we got a boat. We loved it but then moved overseas so had to sell. We will definitely have another when we retire. Its not practical here with my husband traveling so much.
ReplyDeleteI popped over to visit and thank you for your comments, then after reading a few posts, wondered where I could find a place to offer an honest and useful comment. This is it!
ReplyDeleteThere are thousands of sub cultures around us but of course we can only fit in a few. For a while I was active in the Australian Atheists' Foundation, but now don't bother. I cannot embrace a religion, but do not need to be supported by an organised cheer squad, nor do I need to criticise those who do.
Of course, I blog and write, so that is a subculture but it takes up so much time that it must be rationed, then like Joyce, I belong to one of the best subcultures of all, that of people living on boats.
Boats shrink your area of responsibility to a manageable size. In a way it is similar to the RV experience, but there is the added element of (perceived) danger that encourages us to see ourselves as survivors in much the same way as military veterans must feel about each other. There exists among yachties, a mutual trust and a willingness to help that is universal. Whatever one's 'station' in life was prior to taking to the sea is irrelevant. Perfect strangers arrive in an anchorage and invite each other over for dinner! I do envy you your ready made crew!
I belong to so many subcultures that I sometimes think I must suffer from multiple personality disorder (or is that order?) :-)
ReplyDeleteToo many to list here!!
ReplyDeleteI do now: bloggers!!!
ReplyDeleteBeing a minority, yes I do:) And hey, as a blogger too!
