I Can't Even Make This Stuff Up
Yesterday in school, the 4th graders were working in groups and my son said to the kids in his group, "This problem seems impossible!" And his friend next to him said, "Nothing is impossible when you don't try." My son said, "What does that mean?" The response, "Just that, nothing is impossible when you don't try." My son said, " It doesn't make any sense, do you mean everything is impossible when you don't try?" And the kid said, " No, nothing is impossible when you don't try." The teacher was making rounds checking on the groups. The group told the teacher the quote and asked what that meant. And the teacher said, "Oh, always do your best." My son was confused about this all day, and came home and told me. I had the same reaction as he did, and the same confusion. Then last night the baseball coach was giving a pre game pep talk and my son asked the coach in the huddle what he thought that meant. And the coach said, "Yes. Just like he said, never give up."

Oh, goodness. Maybe (Hopefully?) the teacher and the coach were trying to humor him, like, "Oh, he means nothing is impossible if you TRY."
ReplyDeleteThings that make you go Hmmmmm??????
ReplyDeleteNow I share your son's confusion :-/
ReplyDeleteI like what a thinker your son is! :)
ReplyDeleteYep, I'm confused right along with the both of you. Ha
ReplyDeleteI think he meant "Nothing is impossible when you try". I'm not sure!
ReplyDeleteHuge beaming smile coming through. My foggy mommy brain can't process all the double negatives, but message received per coach's summary ;)
ReplyDeleteLOL. Now my brain hurts. ;)
ReplyDeleteSo cute-love the things kids say!
ReplyDeleteSo, so confusing. Oy!!
ReplyDeleteTeacher and Coach either need to learn some word meanings...or need to learn to listen!!
ReplyDeleteOk, I've repeated that sentence to myself a few times and I still don't get it. It doesn't make sense. I like the idea of never giving up. Maybe they should just say that instead of the other totally confusing statement.
ReplyDeleteHmmmm... doesn't make sense to me:) Have a blessed day, HUGS!
ReplyDeleteVery confusing!
ReplyDeleteHa! A double negative!! It means the opposite of what the boy said so the teacher and the coach interpreted it correctly. :)
ReplyDelete<><
No, I've said it over and over and it does not make sense!
ReplyDeleteWhat the kid was trying to say, I think, is that if you never try anything, you'll never fail. Which is true. It's also true that you'll never succeed, but people with no ambition might not care about that. So the kid is saying "don't bother trying anything that's challenging ever."
ReplyDeleteThis is actually a reason that perfectionists often have a hard time finishing projects (both big and small). If they never finish, they never run the risk of seeing all the imperfections...
Just keep trying - thats the crux of it
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of my Logic class in college! Totally confused.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you - the comment was wrong! lol sandie
ReplyDeleteI'm with your son and you! Confused :/ People say the darnest things! I guess?
ReplyDeletePersonally I think the kid screwed it up. What he said doesn't make a lick of sense.
ReplyDeleteLOL so funny...interesting interpretations from the adults!
ReplyDeletethank goodness coaches can figure it out...ha...um, just try...unless you are yoda, then it is do or do not, there is no try...
ReplyDeleteThose tricky double negatives. Clearly they can get the best of us. I like that your son actually paid attention and caught the error.
ReplyDeleteI can think of a dozen other phrases that would really mess these kids up. I wonder what they'd think of the expression: A bird in the hand is...messy.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking that it meant how do you know it's impossible UNLESS you try it.
ReplyDeleteDanielle
Nothing is impossible, listen to what I say, and I'll show you the way.
ReplyDeleteNothing is impossible, when you get on prayer the world will change I swear.
If you wanna move a mountain child just keep the faith
don't let what people say discourage you.
Keep your vision on your goal no wavering
just trust and you will see believe me.
Nothing is impossible, 'cause only love can heal and that's the real deal.
Nothing is impossible, just try it on for size then you'll realize.
If you wanna change or rearrange a narrow mind
just open up your heart then you will see
that real honest and true love surly can't hide
so peace and harmony has to abide.
Nothing is impossible, you can change hate into love and make love rise above.
Nothing is impossible, just try one gentle word and it will transfer.
Don't look aside. Don't look around.
Look down inside that's where love's found.
Open your eyes and realize
there's just one God, and that's your guide.
Nothing is impossible, don't let hope slip away keep your faith each day.
Nothing is impossible, just make it work your way then you'll see a change.
Then you'll see a change.
Then you'll see a change
Then you'll see a change
Then you'll see a change
Then you'll see a change
GYLE WADDY - NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE LYRICS
Maybe he meant Nothing is impossible if you don't know you're trying - you're just doing your best - not imagining it being impossible to begin with...I don't know...a head scratcher for sure!
ReplyDeleteActually, 4th graders are concrete thinkers and that is why both are taking it literal and the adults are trying to fix it and make it 'make sense' but if you take it at face value like a 4th grader then the kid is right, if don't try then it isn't impossible!
ReplyDeleteIf at first you don't succeed try and try again because you'll never know unless you have a go :-).
ReplyDeleteThis is a toughy! The sentence in question was "Nothing is impossible when you don't try. Let's see, If you play with the double negative, then the reverse of the sentence would be, "Everything is impossible when you DO try", which is clearly wrong. It could mean that if you don't try, you'll never either succeed or fail. However, doing nothing means that nothing would ever be accomplished, and therefore you'll never know if it was possible or impossible!
ReplyDeleteIt seems obvious to me that the INTENT of the statement is along the lines of, "You can't win if you don't play." Therefore, the sentence should have read, "Everything is impossible if you don't try."
What it boils down to, is that the sentence as stated, was flat out wrong! And both the teacher and the coach need to pay better attention to what is actually being said!! :)
Wait...WHAT? I don't think anyone but you and your son were listening!
ReplyDeleteseems to me that this kid heard something and repeated it... it makes absolutely no sense at all....Your son is definitely on the right track!
ReplyDeleteHaha. Oh dear.
ReplyDeleteI read that as - oh, how can I explain it in words that make sense?
By not trying, you're not making tasks impossible, because you're just simply not trying to do it. If you don't try, you can't fail! So it's like a lazy person's cop out. Everything is too hard, hence I'm not going to try. Then nothing is impossible?
Does that even make any sense? I think I've confused myself. And probably confused anyone who reads my silly comment. Whoops! Sorry guys.
I think your explanation of the statement does make sense, more sense possibly then the statement itself :). Definitely a confusing statement though, I can see why he'd be confused.
DeleteI think you meant "Even I couldn't stuff this up?" ehhh!!! LOL!
ReplyDeleteToo funny! We all just sort of hear what we think they meant even though the words aren't right! lol
ReplyDeleteyou made me laugh, thank you
ReplyDeleteThat's definitely a confusing statement!
ReplyDeleteI think he got the quote wrong and your son picked up on it, but no one else really listened. People do not train themselves to pay attention. lol
ReplyDeleteLol! I think they were all a bit confused and not listening much. Your son got it right
ReplyDeleteI totally get the confusion on that one! lol!!!
ReplyDeleteI am with you and your son. I think there was a good saying in there somewhere- but the wires got crossed. :)
ReplyDelete~Jess
Maybe it means..that it is possible only when you try it but it can't be impossible if you don't try because you will never know if it is possible unless you actually try it....maybe this is really political speak..hahahahahaha !!!!! xo
ReplyDeleteNothing surprises me any more since I received an email regarding a cancelled deposition from a legal secretary that said: "For all intensive purposes, this case has settled."
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of people out there who don't want to think. Good for your son that he's not one of them.
Makes me think of this: With God, everything is possible. When we let go and let God, nothing will be impossible for us. Maybe, it means it's God's time to try. :)
ReplyDeleteNothing is impossible for God , But understanding the english Language ,because it is a inflected language, can be hard. What one person says can cause a completely different thought in a listener. Is the cup half empty or half full. "Looks like the water is on the halfway mark on that cup."
ReplyDeleteYou know, I thought it made sense the first time I read it, but I'll be darned, it doesn't! I'm confused too!
ReplyDeletePerhaps 2 negatives make a positive.. smile...
ReplyDeleteAre they confused, or what? That's a pretty smart 4th grader you have there.
ReplyDeleteYup, I'm still trying to get it....I hope it doesn't keep me up tonight - hehe!
ReplyDeleteUh, what?? lol
ReplyDeleteHeehee...almost like an Abbott and Costello routine!
ReplyDeleteWell, some people need to actually think before they speak...you are right, it would be unbelievable in a novel.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I was an English major in college and that statement makes no sense to me whatsoever. You've got quite a bright son!
ReplyDeleteKathleen
That is a confusing statement.
ReplyDeleteOh! I am confused now. I still can't get it.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm sure I'm confused-- but if I don't TRY to solve it does that mean I will have conquered the impossible, because I didn't even try?... or something...

Yep I'm confused also!
ReplyDeleteI'm confused too??? Some people just have no clue & apparently they are raising kids who don't have a clue either. LOL
ReplyDeleteI think the other boy was a little confused and your son actually listened and thought about it! Love it!
ReplyDeleteWell I am confused!!!!
ReplyDeleteHuh?
ReplyDeleteThe boy did muddle up his negatives. Your son is a bright boy to have worked this out, whereas his teacher and coach just opted for the obvious intent of the sentence. Your son could have a good career in the legal profession, methinks!

I also think he means "Nothing is impossible when you try". He just kept adding the don't in there and that got everyone confused. My 8 year old does this a lot and drives me batty!
ReplyDeleteHow funny! I agree with the above comment. He probably meant to say "... when you try." Your blog is great! Thanks for stopping by mine today and following! Happy to do the same. :)
ReplyDeleteHahaha. I'm going to have to keep thinking about this one all day - I'm still baffled. :)

At least your son has a brain. Everything is possible if you try does sound reasonable...
ReplyDeleteHehehe! I agree with Susan. At least your son has a brain and caught that!
ReplyDeletethis reminds me of something homer simpson, dad of the year, once said: 'you tried and you failed. the lesson is, never try.' :)
ReplyDeleteSo funny because I too was reminded of Homer Simpson when I read that post. It just sounded like something he or Peter Griffin would say!
ReplyDeleteJust keep trying till you make the impossible possible! :-)
ReplyDeleteMy head hurt after reading the impossible quotes aha but yes, never give up is a great way to put it!
ReplyDeleteha-what? I still can't figure out what it means, even when they say "just don't give up". :-)
ReplyDelete~Imelda (using a friendlier blog) :-)
Art Linkletter would have put this one in a book. I know, I'm dating myself!
