Thank You For Our Freedom

I just go about business, complaining... about the driver who drives under the speed limit in the left lane, picking the longest line to check out, constant bad hair days, my kids with the goal to bother each other consistently succeeding in attaining that goal, another dent that no one knows how it got there, garden bugs, the eternal mess in the kitchen...etc etc etc.. Yet if I stop to even notice or think about my blessings, what a different perspective! The things I complain about are my blessings! That I have a car to drive, money to buy groceries, a garden to harvest, children to fight with each other, dishes to get messy...and live in a land that I love made free by the blood and toil of other people.

  12. Annmarie, We were at a dock party today here in East Tennessee. Someone was wishing that they had a boat so they could cruise the lake and someone else wanted enough money so they could travel with no worries... Then another person being pointed out just how lucky we were already...probably in the top 1% or 2% of the world financially. And, thanks to our armed services we also have our freedom! The complaining stopped... Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  18. Amen. God bless all our service members. My husband served in the AF for 20 years. We were lucky that he never saw combat. As a country, we take for granted those who have suffered, and died. We must never forget.

  21. I always try to look at things in that 'other' perspective', there are so many people in this world who have hit hard times that I am always counting my blessings.

  22. it's always a good approach to life. i try to be like that as much as i can but sometimes, it's not easy.

  32. I agree 110% May this Memorial Day find us guilty of true gratitude for the sacrifices made of others that we may celebrate freedom as we do!

  33. It's easy to glide through life and not think about the freedom gained and secured by others. We don't realize how those same freedoms that cost so dearly can be taken away. We need to pay attention. It can happen suddenly or slowly, with the same results. What a shame if we let these costly freedoms be taken away.

  38. Yes, it is a rare jewel, freedom. I realise this every time I talk with people who live in countries that are not free.

  39. I agree we take things for granted. And sometimes we forget what is important. My Grandfather was in the service. He fought in WWII.He never talked about it because it was too painful.I never got a glimpse of what they went through until I watched a documentary on WWII.After watching that I got a whole new perspective on the hell that they go through fighting. And that was just a glimpse. Not actually being there I still have no clue. After watching that every time I meet someone in the service I thank them.Because I am truly thankful for the sacrifice they made.I just wish my Grandfather was still around.I was younger when he died.I never really thanked him.I wish I had.

  48. I've recently been trying to "check" myself when I get upset on the roads, or when anything bothers me. It bothers me that I so easily get upset by these things, especially when no one is trying to ruin my day or do me harm. Things just happen, and we need to take it easy. And yes, thinking about what we're blessed with instead of everything we can complain about. For instance, if we have clean water to drink, we should not be complaining about petty things. We're alive!

  53. I couldn't agree more! When I checked out of Home Depot today, one of the cashiers complained to the other about some little nothing about work. I sometimes think we've become a nation that thrives on what's wrong and get upset when something's right.

  54. You're absolutely right. I always think of Memorial Day as a day to be grateful. I love how you wrote this post. :)
