Walmart On A Friday
My son didn't listen, surprised? Threw way too many curves balls, on way too many teams, now it is indefinite physical therapy. It is unproductive for me just sitting there, so I thought I would get some shopping done while he has his therapy. I went to go to Aldi after looking at all the ads. The first glitch that should have tipped me off, was the .25 cost to make a shopping cart available. I didn't have a quarter, and couldn't find one even after tilting my purse. So I had to go back to the van to rummage for a lost quarter, that I knew some kid lost somewhere in some seat. Found it! Then I put the quarter in to get the cart and enter a shopping mecca. I love this store! Beautiful cucumbers for .29, cantaloupes for .99, blueberries for .99. A full shopping cart! There is only 1 cashier and after I unpack all my groceries I asked her if I can use a credit card and she said no, I said OK, I'll just write a check. She informs me cash only. The only cash I had was that quarter that was in the cart. There are at least 3 people behind me. I ask her if she would please just hold all this stuff and I'll run to Walmart across the lot and use the ATM there and get cash to pay. I promised I'd be back...she said ok. It is pouring and there is a tornado watch and Walmart is so packed I have to park like a mile away. I thought, I am just going to use the ATM, I'll double park. I couldn't find the ATM, and someone told me it was just right inside. There is a McDonald's right inside and it was overflowing with hungry people, who are very crabby too. For some reason I thought the ketchup dispenser in the back of the McDonald's was an ATM and went there to get cash. When I discover this was not a cash machine I tired to exit but was blocked by the fight in the way of the exit. And these people were mean. And big. Throwing punches and yelling xrated language. Now the women were getting involved. I was trapped! And my phone was in my illegally parked car, where the police would be looking to park when they come to break up this fight, and my unpaid cart fill of groceries was waiting and my son was at physical therapy and the rest of the kids were all probably home from school by now fighting...Ah! I had to just try and get through the combat circle and make my break away. Oh my gosh. Today I am going to just read my book and wait in the waiting room.

Oh, no! Did you make it back and redeem your cart?
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a nightmare. Like Shelly, I'm wondering if you got your groceries.
ReplyDeleteI think I'll keep this for the next time I have a bad day. It'll remind me that it could be worse!
ReplyDeletesounds like a good plot for a movie!! Enjoy your week.
ReplyDeleteOh no!!! Craziness!!!!
ReplyDeleteHope you made it back to get that basket full of groceries:) Have a peaceful day, HUGS!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, this would make a great skit for a comedy show like The Carol Burnett Show or Lucille Ball. If sounds like a nightmare too. I do hope that you finally got your cart of grocery.
ReplyDeleteI don't blame you for just staying put in the waiting room with a book. Sorry about your son injuries that requires physio. That can go on for a while and cost big bucks.
I hope that this week is better for you. Thanks for sharing this drama with us. JB
What a day! What adventure (or should I say misadventure)!
ReplyDeletePS - I always carry an emergency $20 in my wallet and hope the kids don't find it before I need it.
oh my gosh if i hadn't read this here I would have thought this was a comdey skit on TV, (sorry, ha ) poor you, oh my gosh thats so funny! Sorry again!!
ReplyDeleteConflicts like this should remain in books.
ReplyDeleteI think that's a wise decision just to wait in the waiting room and read this time. That's what I would have done. :)
Did you ever get the groceries?? What a mess!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness!!
ReplyDeleteWal-Mart doesn't mess around!
oh my...take you a little sack of sand, a few rocks, a tiny rake and a small tray and tend to a zen garden...that was a fiasco!
ReplyDeleteThat was crazy! It made me laugh at first, then I had to remind myself that this was a real life. I am so sorry for laughing (I hope you'll be able to laugh about it soon) What was the final outcoming? Just like a made-for-tv-movie...a cliff hanger!
ReplyDeleteI love Aldi, but only after the first time of going there. My experience didn't even come close to yours, but beware if you return: Bring your own bags for the grocery or buy them there (just a few cents apiece) AND you have to bag your own!
ReplyDeleteYes, sometimes you just have to take the relaxation time that is given to you. Ha ha, being productive doesn't always have to be on the agenda!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. You are a champ for surviving through the day. Hopefully today is full of predictability and mundaneness. ;)
ReplyDeleteBless your heart!!! How awful, it sounds like something that would happen to me!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a nightmare. I hope you made it back to your car before the police arrived and I hope you got your groceries.
ReplyDeleteI hope today is a much more relaxing day.
Wow. Just the title alone was enough to scare me off. Throw in a McDonald's? I think I'd rather brave the tornado. :)
ReplyDeleteMy mom was lucky, I could never throw a curveball.
ReplyDeleteCranky Old Man
wow what a day you had. I assume you were in Aldi?? I have seen that happen so many times that people don't have the proper payment or don't realize there are no bags. I think they should MAKE a big sign when you first walk into the store to let people know.
ReplyDeleteNow I'm curious. Did you get your groceries?
ReplyDelete=)
oh my...please tell me she held you stuff...and all turned out well in the end...smiles...
ReplyDeleteSo what happened!? Did you get your cash and groceries? Who won the big fight? ;)
ReplyDeleteI was shocked when I read your post. Sadly, it was not about your situation but that you had to pay a quarter to use a shopping cart. I have never heard of any such thing!
ReplyDeleteStill mulling that one over.
The quarter thing is why I don't shop at Aldi's, plus ours is not in a great part of town and their produce is never as great as it seems to be everywhere else. Sorry about your experience, I hope the rest of your week goes better :)
ReplyDeleteNever heard of Aldi's, but I would totally shop there...even if I did have to pay cash and insert a quarter for a cart. Those are awesome prices! Sorry you had such a bad experience!
ReplyDeleteOh my what a mess.I think I have had days like that......Yes indeed I have. And what is with having to pay for a cart?Really Aldi charges for a cart. And only cash?! I will never shop at that store.I guess I know why I have never stepped foot into one of those.
ReplyDelete(((((Hugs))))))
Anne
What is shopping coming to when you have to pay for a cart. Yikes.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nightmare! I hope it all turned out okay.
ReplyDeletesounds like one of those you shoulda just stayed in bed LOL.. I've had some of those days myself..
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! What a headache. Definitely a book reading day. I try to avoid Walmart, but yeah, like that happens. (Insert sarcasm).
ReplyDeleteWow, what a day just doing the grocery shopping! That's penny pinching for them to charge you for a cart for a start and just sets the tone. Guess anywhere there's a McD too, there will be crabby people, Supersize Me showed how that happens...
ReplyDeleteWhat...you are just going to let us hang here?!! I'm sure you didn't get into that fight, you weren't arrested by the cops who found your illegal parking situation..... but did you get the cash and the groceries??
ReplyDeleteHope today is crisis free!
That sounds like the worst shopping trip ever. I probably wouldn't be able to drag myself to the store for a month if that happened to me!
ReplyDeleteoh what a day! :*
ReplyDeleteI am not a fan of Walmart but after your encounter, I am less.Imagine making a ketchup dispenser look like an ATM machine. Talk about bait and switch!
ReplyDeleteWhat a crappy shopping experience! I try and avoid both of those stores at all cost! I'll pay a little more and go to a store that takes cc, has friendlier people, and less parking.
ReplyDeleteopps, meant more parking spaces lol
DeleteWhat a wild ride of a day for you! I know it wasn't humorous at all at the time, but you sure made it entertaining to read.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
You are such a great writer Mom and make all of us laugh! :)
ReplyDeleteomgosh--i can see why the waiting room sounds preferable :)
ReplyDeleteWow! I have craziness like that a lot too.
ReplyDeleteYea, read a book today LOL!
Holy Moly! Don't leave us hanging like that! What happened! Did you get a ticket? Did you get your groceries? Did you go back and they were put up? Our Aldi here takes credit cards! Wonder why yours doesn't?
ReplyDeleteThat was a very bad day! Definitely take a book next time. (and do tell us the outcome).
ReplyDeleteYIKES! I sure hope you didn't get a parking ticket.
ReplyDeleteHow did it all turn out?
<><
Hi Annmarie, OMG... is that to funny I was cracking up. Before moving to Maine I lived in NJ, Idon't know where you live but I could swear it was the same Aldi's. Had a similar experience...just without the fighting!
ReplyDeleteOMG I am still laughing!!! I never went back. Cheri
What a day, was there a reality tv camera crew following you, ha-ha! :) Danica
ReplyDeleteWe don't have an Aldi's here - wish we did - but the first time I went, I was with my mother in Florida, so I know about the shopping cart cost...you get your quarter back when you return it. They have carts like that in Ireland too...anyway, sorry you had so much trouble - some days it is just better to stay in bed!
ReplyDeleteHey - no cliffhangers. What did you end up doing?
ReplyDeleteThis is such a humorous post and I can totally relate. When we lived in Illinois some years back we had an Aldi near and I shopped there every week and LOVED the bargains, but you had to have cash or no deal, which, as you found can prove to be super inconvenient. Hope things go better this week. Thanks for this post.
ReplyDeleteDitto LD Masterson. What ended up happening?
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh... now that is a crazy day!! Hope it ended well! :)
ReplyDeleteI wish I could promise you would never have another day like that but I have to be truthful and tell you it's just one of many! Sorry, to throw reality in your face but, hey, it made a great blog post! No one wants to hear about your perfect life! Throw some reality in there!

My mom just told me about your blog and this post made me laugh so hard. First off, I NEVER have cash on hand and always find myself in predicaments such as yours. Second, I HATE Walmart. You described it perfectly.
ReplyDeletehow awful..hugs
ReplyDeleteSo funny - you almost wouldn't read about it (pardon the pun)! It costs a DOLLAR in the slot here to get a trolley at Aldi!
ReplyDeleteSome days it just doesn't pay to get out of bed :-).
ReplyDeleteWow what a day you had. Hope today is less hectic. ;)
ReplyDeleteDanielle
Some days just don't go right from the start.
ReplyDeleteReads like a comedy sketch outline - you should sent it to Seinfeld! lol!
Beware of the Walmartians!!!!!! See the email I sent you
ReplyDeleteGod, I hate days like that!!! So glad you made it out alive! Laurel
ReplyDeleteAldi's is my absolute favorite grocery store & you save TONS going there. Yeah, the quarter for the cart is a hassle at 1st, but you get used to it. Don't forget your own bags ----- plus you get your quarter back when you return the cart.
ReplyDeleteThey only take cash & debit cards (oh, & Bridge cards too) - but it all keeps the cost down on the groceries. You will not regret shopping there on a more regular basis!
Oh my goodness! Sounds like something that would have happened to me. Except that I might have started crying out of frustration at one point. Glad you made it through all in one piece!
ReplyDeleteI swear, when something goes wrong, then everything goes wrong!!
ReplyDeleteI've never been to Aldi, that sounds really annoying that you have to pay for a shopping cart and cash only for groceries. =/
That should be in a TV show or a movie. What a great story--at least it's a great story, brilliantly written, and fun to read, but not to live it, I'm sure. I think I would just put my son in a taxi and stay home next time!
ReplyDeleteI went with a friend to Costco recently, and despite the great deals, all I could think about was getting out of there! I like my little neighborhood market where everything is overpriced, but I know where it is, there is never a line, and friendly people bag my stuff for me and carry it out to the car. A bargain in my book!
Oh, my goodness. I laughed I cheered you on, I wished ya a thousand quarters-- great post.
ReplyDeleteAloha,
Just stopping in from The ALOHA FRiday Hop to say "hi" and "thanks" for joining the fun. Have a Beautiful Week!
xoxo,

I am now happily following you back and SO glad I am. Your sweet feedback led me to your blog and I can't stop laughing. Thanks for entertaining me. I can't wait to see what adventure awaits you next.
ReplyDeleteamy @ whilewearingheels.blogspot.com
Ahhhh... Walmart... Seriously, it sounds like something that would happen to me. I always have the best of intentions.
ReplyDeleteHi Annmarie, thank you for coming and visiting me! I will definitely follow you back. What a crazy day you had on Friday. It's perplexing that a simple errand can turn into a mountain of work!
ReplyDeleteOh, my. It sounds as if Murphy was following you around!
ReplyDeleteLOL!!! And don't give up on Aldi - the reason they are able to have such low prices is because they don't take credit cards and they don't have to pay someone to return the carts. The customers do it themselves to get their quarter back. Standard practice in Germany, where Aldi originated.
ReplyDeleteAnd they have the best chocolate.... Just sayin'.
Holy crap! Adventure much? LOL. ;)
ReplyDeleteWhat a day! I hope it all ended up working out! I have never been to an Aldi- but now I know to bring cash. :)
ReplyDelete~Stephanie
That was a busy day , I must say! On the bright side , I love Aldi too!:)
ReplyDeleteI hate days like that! Hope it eventually got better. :) Gotta love Mondays!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness - that was a day and half there. sandie
ReplyDeleteLOL! So would you shop again at Aldi?
ReplyDelete~Bliss~
You certainly had an exciting day. I hope you didn't get a ticket, were able to get your groceries, and got back to your son without too many additional adventures.
ReplyDeleteAldi does have some good buys on veggies and fruits. The one close to me does accept debit cards. I will not go to Wal-Mart after 5 or
ReplyDeleteon weekends! It's always crazy! Recently here at a Wal-Mart in Orlando some guy pistol whipped another guy!
Make sure to take a really good book! :)
Walmart always seems like nut house to me. I avoid it, if I can. The prices usually draw me in though, can't beat 'em. Did you get back to Aldi? Crazy!
ReplyDeleteAnnmarie, I avoid both Aldi and Walmart...the savings just aren't worth the hassle...and other than an occassional coffee and fries when my wife and I are traveling, I stay out of McDonald's too. Still, no matter where we go or where we shop, we all have days like the one you describe...it's just inevitable!! Take Care, Big Daddy Dave
ReplyDeleteTalk about making me laugh not just because it was funny but because I have been you..........lol Did you go back for the shopping? I would have gotten really pissed off if I got the checkout ready to pay and be told sorry cash only.......to be honest I would feel like just walking out with the shits......lol
ReplyDeletewow, nightmare
ReplyDeleteOh, that's the worst. Talk about awful! (But I hope you got your groceries!)
ReplyDeleteOkay, so did you make it back to your groceries? That's insane!! thanks for following.
ReplyDeleteHow exhausting!
ReplyDeleteI avoid Aldi's for so many reasons, least of all the cash only policy. Too much planning involved to shop there!
What an adventure!!! Luckily you survived! I just had my first Aldi's experience last week at a new store in NH. My boyfriend and I found the place quite strange and will probably not go back!
ReplyDeleteYou had one crazy day.
ReplyDeleteJust another day at Walmart! ;) Seriously though, that is one trying day! Enjoy a book, magazine and a nice beverage the next time. :)
ReplyDeleteYikes! I'd say you've earned a period of sitting in the waiting room reading a book.
ReplyDeleteOh my word! LOL!! I hate WalMart, but find myself there every week getting groceries! I have learned to be there between 7 and 9 am ... otherwise, I send the husband! Thanks for stopping by Love Bakes Good Cakes and commenting ... otherwise I wouldn't have found your blog! I look forward to seeing more of your posts! <3
ReplyDeleteBtw, I followed via GFC so I wouldn't miss anything ;)
DeleteOMGOSH! What a morning. I have had some doozies with just my two! I hope you got your groceries.
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping by The Family Pants! I'm your newest follower on Twitter and GFC :)
Love love love that you persevered with your shopping trip, amidst the tornado watch and all--you rock ;)
ReplyDeleteSomething interesting is always going on at Walmart.
ReplyDeleteOur Aldis takes cards now, but at first I found myself in a similar situation; scrambling for money to buy my "too good to believe priced" groceries. Yours should too. They are missing out on some good sales.
ReplyDeleteI post this comment with fear and trembling. I mean this as a compliment. I don't doubt your integrity, but I just simply can't believe this marvelous, witty, creative post.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to have just one little ounce of your fantastic sense of humor. That alone will keep me coming back.
Ha! A little comedy. ... at your expense. :-)
ReplyDeleteAnd this also reminded me of Murphy...and his law.
~Imelda
Whoa! Walmart is always an adventure, probably more than you were bargaining for though this time.
ReplyDeletelol. that would be me. thinking the catsup machine was an ATM.
ReplyDeleteOh man, this is a riot! Made me laugh so much! Walmart scares me sometimes!
ReplyDelete~Amy
It doesn't sound like you were having a very good day.
ReplyDeletethings like this really happen? wow, sorry to hear!
ReplyDeleteAnd THAT, my new friend is why I don't go to Walmart. It will almost NEVER end well. Yikes!
ReplyDeleteCraziness! And all you wanted was some fresh fruit. LOL!
ReplyDeleteOh, I think you might rather like our other blog. It's normal. ;-) Stop by when you can. www.earth2body.net
ReplyDeleteearth2body sisters - things we love
My word....your adventure wore me out! Since when do you have to pay for a cart?
ReplyDeleteCliff hanger! We don't get to know how it all turned out? I guess you made it home in one piece to tell the story, and that's what counts. ;-)
ReplyDeleteHope you were able to get your groceries.
ReplyDeleteNo shame in that game...I would to after all that! I hope PT goes great for your son, and he gets his throwing arm back soon. :)
ReplyDeleteHaven't been to Aldis in forever. Yeah that's one thing I hate about Aldis is the .25 to make the shopping cart work. Oh and the fact that the last time I was in there you had to buy your own cloth bags. I love Walmart but hate how they only ever have 1-2 lines open and it's fricking packed.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nightmare....hope you didn't get a ticket and hope you got your groceries. I hate those "off" days, thank God they don't happen very often.
ReplyDeleteSome days are just way better than others. The better days aren't as fun to read about though. I love Aldi's but I wish they'd post all their rules where you could plainly see them before you get in line. I was caught off guard with the no check policy. I also forget to bring my own grocery bags etc. Love the store though.
ReplyDeleteYikes !
ReplyDeletesounds like a crazy moment....
I would have probably called my husband to bring me cash.
Yeah, it also seemed to me like a a plot in a movie. It all seemed messed up. I just wish you didn't get a ticket.
ReplyDelete
