Walmart On A Friday

My son didn't listen, surprised?  Threw way too many curves balls, on way too many teams, now it is indefinite physical therapy. It is unproductive for me just sitting there, so I thought I would get some shopping done while he has his therapy. I went to go to Aldi after looking at all the ads. The first glitch that should have tipped me off, was the .25 cost to make a shopping cart available.  I didn't have a quarter, and couldn't find one even after tilting my purse. So I had to go back to the van to rummage for a lost quarter, that I knew some kid lost somewhere in some seat. Found it! Then I put the quarter in to get the cart and enter a shopping mecca. I love this store! Beautiful cucumbers for .29, cantaloupes for .99,  blueberries for .99. A full shopping cart!  There is only 1 cashier and after I unpack all my groceries I asked her if I can use a credit card and she said no, I said OK, I'll just write a check.  She informs me cash only. The only cash I had was that quarter that was in the cart. There are at least 3 people behind me.  I ask her if she would please just hold all this stuff and I'll run to Walmart across the lot and use the ATM there and get cash to pay. I promised I'd be back...she  said ok.  It is pouring and there is a tornado watch and Walmart is so packed I have to park like a mile away. I thought, I am just going to use the ATM, I'll double park. I couldn't find the ATM, and someone told me it was just right inside. There is a McDonald's right inside and it was overflowing with hungry people, who are very crabby too.  For some reason I thought the ketchup dispenser in the back of the McDonald's was an ATM and went there to get cash.  When I discover this was not a cash machine I tired to exit  but was blocked by the fight in the way of the exit.  And these people were mean. And big. Throwing punches and yelling xrated language.  Now the women were getting involved. I was trapped! And my phone was in my illegally parked car, where the police would be looking to park when they come to break up this fight, and my unpaid cart fill of groceries was waiting and my son was at physical therapy and the rest of the kids were all probably home from school by now fighting...Ah!  I had to just try and get through the combat circle and make my break away.  Oh my gosh. Today  I am going to just read my book and wait in the waiting room.

  1. Oh, no! Did you make it back and redeem your cart?

  2. This sounds like a nightmare. Like Shelly, I'm wondering if you got your groceries.

  3. I think I'll keep this for the next time I have a bad day. It'll remind me that it could be worse!

  4. sounds like a good plot for a movie!! Enjoy your week.

  5. Hope you made it back to get that basket full of groceries:) Have a peaceful day, HUGS!

  6. Oh my gosh, this would make a great skit for a comedy show like The Carol Burnett Show or Lucille Ball. If sounds like a nightmare too. I do hope that you finally got your cart of grocery.

I don't blame you for just staying put in the waiting room with a book. Sorry about your son injuries that requires physio. That can go on for a while and cost big bucks.
I hope that this week is better for you. Thanks for sharing this drama with us. JB

  7. What a day! What adventure (or should I say misadventure)!

PS - I always carry an emergency $20 in my wallet and hope the kids don't find it before I need it.

    ReplyDelete
  8. oh my gosh if i hadn't read this here I would have thought this was a comdey skit on TV, (sorry, ha ) poor you, oh my gosh thats so funny! Sorry again!!

  9. Conflicts like this should remain in books.

I think that's a wise decision just to wait in the waiting room and read this time. That's what I would have done. :)

  10. Did you ever get the groceries?? What a mess!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Oh my goodness!!

    Wal-Mart doesn't mess around!

    ReplyDelete
  12. oh my...take you a little sack of sand, a few rocks, a tiny rake and a small tray and tend to a zen garden...that was a fiasco!

    ReplyDelete
  13. That was crazy! It made me laugh at first, then I had to remind myself that this was a real life. I am so sorry for laughing (I hope you'll be able to laugh about it soon) What was the final outcoming? Just like a made-for-tv-movie...a cliff hanger!

  14. I love Aldi, but only after the first time of going there. My experience didn't even come close to yours, but beware if you return: Bring your own bags for the grocery or buy them there (just a few cents apiece) AND you have to bag your own!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yes, sometimes you just have to take the relaxation time that is given to you. Ha ha, being productive doesn't always have to be on the agenda!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh my goodness. You are a champ for surviving through the day. Hopefully today is full of predictability and mundaneness. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Bless your heart!!! How awful, it sounds like something that would happen to me!!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. What a nightmare. I hope you made it back to your car before the police arrived and I hope you got your groceries.
I hope today is a much more relaxing day.

  19. Wow. Just the title alone was enough to scare me off. Throw in a McDonald's? I think I'd rather brave the tornado. :)

  21. wow what a day you had. I assume you were in Aldi?? I have seen that happen so many times that people don't have the proper payment or don't realize there are no bags. I think they should MAKE a big sign when you first walk into the store to let people know.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Now I'm curious. Did you get your groceries?

    =)

    ReplyDelete
  23. oh my...please tell me she held you stuff...and all turned out well in the end...smiles...

    ReplyDelete
  24. So what happened!? Did you get your cash and groceries? Who won the big fight? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  25. I was shocked when I read your post. Sadly, it was not about your situation but that you had to pay a quarter to use a shopping cart. I have never heard of any such thing!

    Still mulling that one over.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The quarter thing is why I don't shop at Aldi's, plus ours is not in a great part of town and their produce is never as great as it seems to be everywhere else. Sorry about your experience, I hope the rest of your week goes better :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Never heard of Aldi's, but I would totally shop there...even if I did have to pay cash and insert a quarter for a cart. Those are awesome prices! Sorry you had such a bad experience!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh my what a mess.I think I have had days like that......Yes indeed I have. And what is with having to pay for a cart?Really Aldi charges for a cart. And only cash?! I will never shop at that store.I guess I know why I have never stepped foot into one of those.

  29. What is shopping coming to when you have to pay for a cart. Yikes.

    ReplyDelete
  30. What a nightmare! I hope it all turned out okay.

    ReplyDelete
  31. sounds like one of those you shoulda just stayed in bed LOL.. I've had some of those days myself..

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh my gosh! What a headache. Definitely a book reading day. I try to avoid Walmart, but yeah, like that happens. (Insert sarcasm).

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wow, what a day just doing the grocery shopping! That's penny pinching for them to charge you for a cart for a start and just sets the tone. Guess anywhere there's a McD too, there will be crabby people, Supersize Me showed how that happens...

    ReplyDelete
  34. What...you are just going to let us hang here?!! I'm sure you didn't get into that fight, you weren't arrested by the cops who found your illegal parking situation..... but did you get the cash and the groceries??

    Hope today is crisis free!

    ReplyDelete
  35. That sounds like the worst shopping trip ever. I probably wouldn't be able to drag myself to the store for a month if that happened to me!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I am not a fan of Walmart but after your encounter, I am less.Imagine making a ketchup dispenser look like an ATM machine. Talk about bait and switch!

    ReplyDelete
  37. What a crappy shopping experience! I try and avoid both of those stores at all cost! I'll pay a little more and go to a store that takes cc, has friendlier people, and less parking.

    ReplyDelete

    1. opps, meant more parking spaces lol

  38. What a wild ride of a day for you! I know it wasn't humorous at all at the time, but you sure made it entertaining to read.
    Blessings!

  39. You are such a great writer Mom and make all of us laugh! :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. omgosh--i can see why the waiting room sounds preferable :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Wow! I have craziness like that a lot too.

Yea, read a book today LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Holy Moly! Don't leave us hanging like that! What happened! Did you get a ticket? Did you get your groceries? Did you go back and they were put up? Our Aldi here takes credit cards! Wonder why yours doesn't?

    ReplyDelete
  43. That was a very bad day! Definitely take a book next time. (and do tell us the outcome).

    ReplyDelete
  44. YIKES! I sure hope you didn't get a parking ticket.

How did it all turn out?

  45. Hi Annmarie, OMG... is that to funny I was cracking up. Before moving to Maine I lived in NJ, Idon't know where you live but I could swear it was the same Aldi's. Had a similar experience...just without the fighting!

OMG I am still laughing!!! I never went back. Cheri

  46. What a day, was there a reality tv camera crew following you, ha-ha! :) Danica

    ReplyDelete
  47. We don't have an Aldi's here - wish we did - but the first time I went, I was with my mother in Florida, so I know about the shopping cart cost...you get your quarter back when you return it. They have carts like that in Ireland too...anyway, sorry you had so much trouble - some days it is just better to stay in bed!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hey - no cliffhangers. What did you end up doing?

    ReplyDelete
  49. This is such a humorous post and I can totally relate. When we lived in Illinois some years back we had an Aldi near and I shopped there every week and LOVED the bargains, but you had to have cash or no deal, which, as you found can prove to be super inconvenient. Hope things go better this week. Thanks for this post.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Ditto LD Masterson. What ended up happening?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh my gosh... now that is a crazy day!! Hope it ended well! :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. I wish I could promise you would never have another day like that but I have to be truthful and tell you it's just one of many! Sorry, to throw reality in your face but, hey, it made a great blog post! No one wants to hear about your perfect life! Throw some reality in there!

  53. My mom just told me about your blog and this post made me laugh so hard. First off, I NEVER have cash on hand and always find myself in predicaments such as yours. Second, I HATE Walmart. You described it perfectly.

    ReplyDelete
  54. So funny - you almost wouldn't read about it (pardon the pun)! It costs a DOLLAR in the slot here to get a trolley at Aldi!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Some days it just doesn't pay to get out of bed :-).

    ReplyDelete
  56. Wow what a day you had. Hope today is less hectic. ;)

  57. Some days just don't go right from the start.

Reads like a comedy sketch outline - you should sent it to Seinfeld! lol!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Beware of the Walmartians!!!!!! See the email I sent you

    ReplyDelete
  59. God, I hate days like that!!! So glad you made it out alive! Laurel

    ReplyDelete
  60. Aldi's is my absolute favorite grocery store & you save TONS going there. Yeah, the quarter for the cart is a hassle at 1st, but you get used to it. Don't forget your own bags ----- plus you get your quarter back when you return the cart.
They only take cash & debit cards (oh, & Bridge cards too) - but it all keeps the cost down on the groceries. You will not regret shopping there on a more regular basis!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Oh my goodness! Sounds like something that would have happened to me. Except that I might have started crying out of frustration at one point. Glad you made it through all in one piece!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I swear, when something goes wrong, then everything goes wrong!!

I've never been to Aldi, that sounds really annoying that you have to pay for a shopping cart and cash only for groceries. =/

    ReplyDelete
  63. That should be in a TV show or a movie. What a great story--at least it's a great story, brilliantly written, and fun to read, but not to live it, I'm sure. I think I would just put my son in a taxi and stay home next time!

I went with a friend to Costco recently, and despite the great deals, all I could think about was getting out of there! I like my little neighborhood market where everything is overpriced, but I know where it is, there is never a line, and friendly people bag my stuff for me and carry it out to the car. A bargain in my book!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Oh, my goodness. I laughed I cheered you on, I wished ya a thousand quarters-- great post.

  66. Ahhhh... Walmart... Seriously, it sounds like something that would happen to me. I always have the best of intentions.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Hi Annmarie, thank you for coming and visiting me! I will definitely follow you back. What a crazy day you had on Friday. It's perplexing that a simple errand can turn into a mountain of work!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Oh, my. It sounds as if Murphy was following you around!

    ReplyDelete
  69. LOL!!! And don't give up on Aldi - the reason they are able to have such low prices is because they don't take credit cards and they don't have to pay someone to return the carts. The customers do it themselves to get their quarter back. Standard practice in Germany, where Aldi originated.

And they have the best chocolate.... Just sayin'.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Holy crap! Adventure much? LOL. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  71. What a day! I hope it all ended up working out! I have never been to an Aldi- but now I know to bring cash. :)

  74. Oh my goodness - that was a day and half there. sandie

    ReplyDelete
  75. LOL! So would you shop again at Aldi?

    ~Bliss~

    ReplyDelete
  76. You certainly had an exciting day. I hope you didn't get a ticket, were able to get your groceries, and got back to your son without too many additional adventures.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Aldi does have some good buys on veggies and fruits. The one close to me does accept debit cards. I will not go to Wal-Mart after 5 or
on weekends! It's always crazy! Recently here at a Wal-Mart in Orlando some guy pistol whipped another guy!
Make sure to take a really good book! :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. Walmart always seems like nut house to me. I avoid it, if I can. The prices usually draw me in though, can't beat 'em. Did you get back to Aldi? Crazy!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Annmarie, I avoid both Aldi and Walmart...the savings just aren't worth the hassle...and other than an occassional coffee and fries when my wife and I are traveling, I stay out of McDonald's too. Still, no matter where we go or where we shop, we all have days like the one you describe...it's just inevitable!! Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

    ReplyDelete
  80. Talk about making me laugh not just because it was funny but because I have been you..........lol Did you go back for the shopping? I would have gotten really pissed off if I got the checkout ready to pay and be told sorry cash only.......to be honest I would feel like just walking out with the shits......lol

    ReplyDelete
  81. Oh, that's the worst. Talk about awful! (But I hope you got your groceries!)

    ReplyDelete
  82. Okay, so did you make it back to your groceries? That's insane!! thanks for following.

    ReplyDelete
  83. How exhausting!
I avoid Aldi's for so many reasons, least of all the cash only policy. Too much planning involved to shop there!

    ReplyDelete
  84. What an adventure!!! Luckily you survived! I just had my first Aldi's experience last week at a new store in NH. My boyfriend and I found the place quite strange and will probably not go back!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Just another day at Walmart! ;) Seriously though, that is one trying day! Enjoy a book, magazine and a nice beverage the next time. :)

    ReplyDelete
  86. Yikes! I'd say you've earned a period of sitting in the waiting room reading a book.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Oh my word! LOL!! I hate WalMart, but find myself there every week getting groceries! I have learned to be there between 7 and 9 am ... otherwise, I send the husband! ReplyDelete
  91. Our Aldis takes cards now, but at first I found myself in a similar situation; scrambling for money to buy my "too good to believe priced" groceries. Yours should too. They are missing out on some good sales.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I post this comment with fear and trembling. I mean this as a compliment. I don't doubt your integrity, but I just simply can't believe this marvelous, witty, creative post.

I'd like to have just one little ounce of your fantastic sense of humor. That alone will keep me coming back.

  106. Haven't been to Aldis in forever. Yeah that's one thing I hate about Aldis is the .25 to make the shopping cart work. Oh and the fact that the last time I was in there you had to buy your own cloth bags. I love Walmart but hate how they only ever have 1-2 lines open and it's fricking packed.

    ReplyDelete
  107. What a nightmare....hope you didn't get a ticket and hope you got your groceries. I hate those "off" days, thank God they don't happen very often.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Some days are just way better than others. The better days aren't as fun to read about though. I love Aldi's but I wish they'd post all their rules where you could plainly see them before you get in line. I was caught off guard with the no check policy. I also forget to bring my own grocery bags etc. Love the store though.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Yikes !
    sounds like a crazy moment....
