How I Can Tell My Husband Is Listening

I cut coupons religiously, scour the Sunday ads, wait for sales and then negotiate ...and so when my husband takes the kids to Dicks to buy his sporting stuff and does not use that $10 off coupon, he is in trouble! He has to always use the coupon! We have been married 28 years..about how long I have been telling him about the coupon. This last trip, he forgot. And when he came home with the boys and saw me, he knew he forgot. The next day, my husband told me about his dream.....he was shopping with his fraternity brothers in Boscovos and they were taking golf shoes off of the shelves looking for the right size. They were disappointed they could not find what they were looking for and as they were exiting the store empty handed the sales clerk said they first must pay a restocking fee. My husband said, "What? I put everything back. What is a restocking fee?"  The 17 year old clerk said it was company policy and he had to pay it.  My husband said, "I have never heard of this. I am not paying a restocking fee." The kid told him he had to. My husband then requested the manager. Meanwhile the fraternity boys were getting uncomfortable with all of this commotion about the restocking fee...and opened their wallets and said, "Here, just pay the stupid fee. It's like a dollar." My husband said, "No, I can't pay a restocking fee." The manager came and also told the group he really did not know the origins of this fee and they would not have to pay it this time.
I think he is starting to get the point...even if it is only in his dreams.

  2. I think dreams have a way of creeping into reality :)

I never use coupons, I hear all the time from peeps who save tons by doing so, I really need to jump on the coupon wagon...

  3. haha....you are haunting his dreams...coupons are cool though..i am all about saving money...

  4. I used to use coupons and just got away from it. I was thinking the other day with the price of things I should get back into it.

  5. Coupons really do give extra value. However, I hate them and probably would not collect them by myself. The dream had a real twist to it with the stocking fee.

  6. LOL, that is a funny story. At least you know you are getting to him when he starts dreaming about having to pay for things that ought not to be paid for. Some day he may remember on his own!

  7. It's only been 28 years... these men take time... sometimes we live long enough to see them finally "get it".

  8. Ah coupons, ah dreams of restocking fees.
    I do use coupons.

  9. LOL!!! Poor guy! I use coupons as much as I can. Guys just don't seem to like being bothered with them.

  10. Well, that was a good story. Now let's see if he remembers the damn coupon.

  11. Wouldnt suprise me if they came up with something like that, always trying to get more money out of us! Go hubby, stand strong :)

  12. Baby steps. right? But it sounds like he's finally starting to "get it". Now that my hubby is retired, he's almost as religious about using coupons as I am.

  13. Great story about the dream. Now he will hear your "voice" in his head reminding him to use the darned coupon!

  14. What a funny story and how frustrating for us who like to save money when our man who says he wasnts to save money too "forgets" to us the money saving coupon......lol

  15. That's a hoot. I guess telling you that dream is his way of admitting that you're onto something with coupons.

Thanks for your visit to my blog and for your kind words. It's always nice to see a new face stop by. :)

  16. It's a coupon! I remember my hubby being that way, until we had our daughter and the coupons meant we could do something fun or stay at home. He warmed up to the coupons.

  17. ha! I'm a coupon fan but only use them when online shopping. I can't get it together enough to remember to clip them AND bring them with me haha

  18. Annmarie, My wife is lucky if I remember what day it is or what's on the calendar. She's always writing me lists...which really helps...unless I forget to take the list with me! Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  19. I am a thrifty shopper but always seem to forget the coupons. Frustrating. I love your organization and ability to get the hubs to remember to use them usually even if he forgets once in a while. I mean, hey, his dreams remind him to not forget next time. LOL

  20. I can never remember about the coupons either. My daughter in law clips them religiously and I'm so proud of her for doing that. I'm a slacker.

  21. Sometimes hitting them in the head with a hammer results in them remembering better the next time....just a thought and a gentle tap will do- No need to beat a dead horse-!;>) xo Diana

  22. I frequently forget to use the coupons my husband tears out, so I have empathy for your hubby. My husband has a mind like a steel trap and mine is like a sieve. So I like the new thing that Safeway is doing-- you go to their website and download the coupons you want and then when you buy those items and swipe your Safeway Club card (or use your phone number), you are charged the discounted coupon price. No paper coupons involved, so none to forget. I just have to remember to write down which coupons I downloaded.

My dreams frequently involve something that I've had an issue with or a frustration about someone or something.

  24. I like this one. I am a fan of using coupons too.

  25. Such a funny dream! But I hate restocking fees!! I never do business more than once with any company that has them. They are enough to give a person nightmares. ;)

  26. I think I finally rubbed my coupon addition on my husband! He rarely forgets coupons now :) It will come...

  27. hahaha, that was an intense dream! We don't have coupons in New Zealand, we have cards that we can swipe for discounts in supermarkets.

  28. My sister love using coupons. We always have drama in grocery...hahaha but really this such an intense drama...hahaha:)

  29. I always enjoy these anecdotal stories from your life.

  30. The coupon can be skipped if we buy less. That is fool proof.

  39. I marvel at the coupon thing. I tried it for awhile but I don't get coupons like I used to, so I just buy the generic or the one on special for the week. My husband is interestingly enough into the coupon thing, so he'll use them if I have them.

    ReplyDelete
  40. OH MY... I will tape the coupon to my Husband's credit card! If you don't use the coupon, it is like throwing money away:) Have a blessed day dear friend, HUGS!

  41. What an interesting husband you have. I don't use coupons simply because they are all (or nearly all) for things I would never buy anyways. I am a believer in store brands and on-sale shelf items (and meats too).

    ReplyDelete
  42. That's pretty funny but it really wouldn't surprise me if stores started doing something like that!!
    Love Di ♥

  43. Ha ha you are getting through to him if he's starting to dream about it!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ah, its the guilt and he's feeling guilty. I do coupons, too. We try not to buy anything unless its on sale or Mama ha s a coupon.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Haha, that's funny!
Poor thing, he must have been feeling so tortured about not using that coupon.

    Hugs

  46. Ha ha! Well maybe he will never forget a coupon now. I know my husband has forgotten a few times so I eventually just gave up reminding him...

  50. My husband goes into a panic when he comes home and remembers that he forgot to use the coupon. Though, when he does remember, I think he expects a big pat on the back :)

  51. That's GREAT! So how many years of marriage did it take until you got him to listen? We're coming up on 8 years and sometimes I think my kids listen better than my hubby!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Sounds like you are rubbing off on him, subconsciously at least...

    ;)

  53. How funny! I won't go to the craft store without a coupon...that is my downfall. :)

  54. On the rare times my husband goes into a store, he will have the coupon in hand. Funny that the only store he goes to is Dick's, and it is their $10 coupon that he uses. I usually forget it until I'm at the store. Luckily, when getting soccer cleats for four kids, the salesperson usually takes pity on us and hands me a coupon.

  57. i remind my hubby all the time before he heads out to buy whatever he is on the list. thankfully, he's listened so far... but then, we've only been married 8 years, not 28 years like you. :)

love reading your posts. i can relate, and it's always heartwarming. :)

    have a great week, a!

  61. My oldest married daughter is a religious - 4 issues of Sunday paper - coupon-er. I am glad. She has 5 mouths to feed! With just my DH and me, we do it at certain times for certain products. I love it! I love having free money!!! The dream was interesting. Tell him it is FREE MONEY!!!

    ReplyDelete
  65. I need to change my focus...on how I can tell my husband is listening instead of not listening....I have that one figured out!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Haha!! My husband has to use the coupon AND his Dicks scorecard to get the rewards points. He usually remembers one out of two. :)

    ReplyDelete
  67. really like your blog. haha.. i make sure my husband uses Express and Banana Republic coupons, a couple times he came home paying full price, and I made him go get a price adjustment, he got like $50 bucks back. It's sucha waste to shop for things when there are coupons readily available.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Hehehe! I've never heard of a restocking fee either. I hope no store manager hears of that dream and thinks to make it true!
