What Is In A Name?

As we were preparing for vacation, we could not decide what to do with our puppy. We went through a mental list of all the kids and adults who could take care of him and decided he was too much work to ask, even if we paid them. We looked at kennels. We found a place, called Noahs Pet Hotel and Spa. Oh! This definitely got the ok from the boys. They felt very happy our puppy was going to be spending the week at a spa while we were on vacation. When we dropped the dog off the boys were surprised. They said this is not at all what the name said and was more of a glorified pound. They were right. So we had a teaching moment.
4 days later we are walking on the Boardwalk coming back from our traditional go- kart family racing. This has been one fun thing where we spend money on the boardwalk.  With 11 people any boardwalk would quickly become a money pit, so the kids know, don't even ask for anything else. As we are leaving the go karts, my 12 year old finds 11 tickets. And in unison the boys beg to go on Alien Abduction. Really? Alien Abduction. We told them they only want to go on that ride because of the name and they insist that is not at all the case! They wanted to go on this ride ever since they saw it etc, .. we add another $20 so they could all go on Alien Abduction. They were very happy with this breaking of the rules and ran onto the ride (not one other person in line) I waited outside with my husband....the alien ship closed with the kids were inside...the ride starts spinning very very fast....and we could hear the screams...after what seemed like forever the ride opens up and the kids crawl out...dizzy and greenish looking. They knew they really could not say what the ride was like so they said, "Oh, it was great." Another teaching moment!

  2. Sadly, the best way to learn about money pits is to have the disappointing experience. I hope the rest of your holiday was fine.

  3. Oh yes, those teaching moments. we never know when they come. but they worth it though. only sometimes, they're too hard.

  4. I hope the puppy and the kids were all OK.

  5. As adults we have many "money Pit" teaching moments. Better to get the bulk of the learning out of the way young, I say...

  6. I love hearing the stories of your family..always interesting and kind of funny!

  7. Beth's hope (above) is mine: I hope everyone, puppy and kids, was okay.

  8. Both were good teaching moments. As they say "live and learn".

  9. Without the teachingmoments, we wouldn't learn anything about how to live. Children need to experience them in order to be prepared for this thing we call life.

  10. Hope the pup was ok! I get green just watching those rides:) Have a blessed evening, HUGS!

  11. I love your stories! That's pretty awesome. Alien Abduction because they came out GREEN!

  12. I never liked leaving my dogs, or kids. Always felt like nobody could care for them like I did.

Haha, on the (ride) teaching moment!

  13. I don't know what's the lesser of the two evils - - embarking on an Alien Abduction or spending a week at Noah's Pet Hotel.

  14. Those teaching moments last a whole life long~

  15. Awww! I hope this hotel took good care of your puppy though. That is not easy dropping pets off with strangers!!!! Alien Abduction sounds like a ride at our local amusement park called The Turkish Twist. It spins around and around while the floor drops and your body is stuck to the wall, being held there by the force of spinning. I hit a point in my teen years when I swore I will never step foot on that ride again (and have not)!

  17. Our son begged and begged to go on the Haunted House ride at Disneyland when he was eight. The minute the doors closed he started screaming like he was on fire and they had to stop the ride so we could get off. Actually, I didn't mind; it looked really creepy, not that I'd admit that to our son.

  18. Things are not always how we think they will be- so true and such a good lesson!

  19. My friend owns a kennel. People often come to interview her and tour the facility before leaving their pet the first time. They always seem pleased. The returning dogs run to meet her or the staff when they come in. No alien abduction there.

  20. How many times have I bought something just because of a clever-sounding name...LOL. Luckily, it always was something small (food, toiletries, etc.) and not large (cars...) and therefore just a gentle reminder.

    Alien Abduction...LOL. I know I couldn't do a ride like that.

  21. Even the name scares me! I once did Tower of Terror at Universal or MGM - I forget which. Silly me...what part of Tower of Terror did I not understand! I can sympathize with the boys...had to 'man up' about it! Funny...

  22. Experience, as C.S. Lewis notes, can be the harshest, but best, of teachers. I'm sure the kids did look as though they had actually been abducted by aliens! Great lesson for all that not everything is as "golden" as it appears.
    Blessings!

  23. hehe took the family on a roller coaster on vacation...first time for my boys...they begged and begged....ha...they learned though..smiles...

  24. I guess we ALL learn things like this sometimes. It is harder on kids, I think, to handle disappointment when something is not what the expect. Even though they will never tell you- they learned something- xo Diana

  25. Hahah. Alien Abduction- I have no idea why that name would be appealing! I guess you have to put yourself in the mindframe of a kid to understand that!

  26. Great teaching lessons! Sometimes we as parents are not ready for them but when they happen we need to take advantage of them.

Thanks so much for following. Following you back! Have a great evening !!

  28. It's tough and expensive to kennel dogs in a nice place. I feel a little queasy even reading about that ride.

  29. A very amusing story, and very true. :)

  30. It sounds as if you had a couple of very teachable moments. I'm sure you made the best of them.

    ReplyDelete
  31. LOL! Sounds like they are getting a well rounded education in life! :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh these teachable moments. I still haven't learned my lesson, those rides et me every time.

  33. Love the teaching moments with my young daughter! Very valuable time for us. I also want to let you know that I've chosen you for the Sunshine Blogger Award. You can view the post about it at my blog when you can.

  34. I feel sick just thinking about that spinning Alien Ship!

  35. These teaching moments are so precious! I'm sure both you and the kids found great value in them.

  36. Hey thanks for dropping on by my blog and for following! I've definitely followed you back and look forward to reading more! Don't you just love those moments? Sounds like they came out looking green - so maybe something happened in that Alien abduction... :)

  37. lots of teaching moments.... I hope you all had a great trip (and the puppy was okay too)

  38. Was it one of those rides where the floor drops out from under them? I can't believe I ever liked those!

  39. It's always great to have teaching moments for your kids. I bet those teaching moments are pretty entertaining for you too.

  40. Oh, I hope your little dog is all right. We are very fortunate to have always had a petsitter available to keep Trudy. She loves to go visit her friends when we leave town. Alien ride spinning - yikes. Glad you survived it.

  41. Ah, those teaching moments! We have to figure out what to do with our dog, in all his years of life he's never been away from people he knows but we've got an out-of-state event planned later this year where everyone will be there but he can't go!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh goodness, what a way to let kids learn a lesson! Those teaching moments are golden though. Oh, and thanks for the follow! Following you back now :)

  43. Live and learn and I love the Family Go-kart tradition. As soon as little guy is old enough to drive himself we may do that. The huge age gap makes it hard to do something as a whole family.

    Happy End of Summer mom!

  44. hahaha, poor boys. and the kennel thing? I didn't want to leave my "baby" when we went on vacation, so I found a small pet place where the woman kept the pets in her home. he was the only pet that weekend. but he came home infested with fleas!!!! it's the clean kennel the next time. my teaching moment.

  45. I have been teaching my children too about advertising being misleading. My daughter was so disappointed with a yard sale that was advertised as "HUGE" last weekend. "4 tables is NOT HUGE" she complained when we arrived lol.

    ReplyDelete
  46. This is a great story. I'm so glad your kids respect you enough to not beg. I abhor begging. And the lesson in advertising. Priceless. :)

  47. I sort of hate teaching moments. Sadly, they're necessary.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Those moments are a part of life. If we did not have them we would never really learn anything. Sounds as if you had a great vacation!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Ugh. Just reading about that ride made my stomach churn...

    ;)

    ReplyDelete
  50. LOL! So they came out of it looking like little green men?! priceless...

  51. I remember taking my 6-year old daughter on the Tower of Terror at Disney World. Twelve years on she still reminds me what a cruel, reckless, irresponsible parent I am! That day she learnt that she can't always trust her dad (just 99.9% of the time).

    ReplyDelete
  52. They probably liked it better BECAUSE of the name. I remember being a bit like that as a kid....

    ReplyDelete
  53. Maybe that ride should be named "Alien Spin Cycle." I could handle spinning rides like the teacups at Disneyland when I was a kid, but I can't handle any spinning or up-and-down rides any more without getting nauseous. I even get nauseous on a swing now-a-days.

  54. I hope your vacation was amazing. I would be sick for weeks if I did that Alien Abduction ride!

    ReplyDelete
  55. i think it is not too much to ask for a friend to take care of a puppy for a week... at least i would not care taking care of pets if a friend is on vacation?
and well, green faces = aliens?

  56. Too funny...the pet spa wasn't really a spa and the alien abduction ride wasn't really an abduction, more of a transformation...lol

    ReplyDelete
  57. Again, too funny!! I love it!!

  58. That's too funny! Sounds like a great vacation!
