A Glimpse Inside the Mind Of A College Student

My 19 year old college son was home this weekend for fall break. My husband invited him to play basketball with his group, like they used to when my son was in high school. I get nervous when my  husband plays this contact sport. I made him quit for awhile last year, when the black eyes, bruises, and limping were getting common. So last night when they came home from playing and were in one piece, I expressed my relief. My son was confused. He thought it was easier for a 51 year old man to be running up and down the court than it was for him. He explained with all of his experience and all, my husband was more used to it.
Moving along to my senior in college daughter.  She called last week to tell me the college health center is offering $30 in cash incentives for students to get flu shots.  Would it be ok if her friend, who already got the flu shot, got another one so he could get the money?

  1. Sometimes I wonder what all that money we pay for college is going for. They do keep us entertained though.

  2. Experience rocks!I look back to those times and see that with my limit experience in life, my judgments were suspect. I would never knock the kids. they're growing up.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Wouldn't it be wiser for the health centre to offer 'free' health shots, or, are teenagers these days naturally suspicious of 'free offers'?

  4. I don't even try to get inside the mind of college-aged kids! You just have to laugh...nervously, I think!

    ReplyDelete
  5. haha! My junior in college daughter is thinking of selling her plasma :)

  6. I don't even know what to say about the $30 shot thing! LOL

  7. I hope you advised NO to that second flu shot?

It amazes me how often hubby throws his back out picking up the grandson, I can't imagine him playing basketball!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Wow I hope you said no about getting a second flu shot, that is most definitely not good.

    ReplyDelete
  9. One thing we have to remember, these are our leaders of the future, does a double flu shot mean he wont need one next year.

Seriously these kids (mine included) scare me sometimes Ha Ha

  10. Glad to hear the basketball playing was injury free. Get a second flu shot! Boy that sounds like a bad idea.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Why not. Get four or five shots and rake in the dough.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Our children really know how to get over...or they seem to think so, but they just don't know, we set the bar on getting over...not so long ago, right? LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  13. So what did you tell her? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  14. I have the same question - what did you tell her?

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think it takes a few years for the college education to actually kick in. They are still "precious" at any age, aren't they.

I would think more than one flu shot would have to be a bad idea.

  16. They're paying kids to get a flu shot? Hmmm..with your tuition dollars or some other mystery pot of money?

I'm all for kids living in close quarters getting a flu shot but not so sure they should be paid to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  17. well ya got to admitt, it never gets boring...right ? :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Thar's why we send them to college; to aid in their thinking ability, right?

    ReplyDelete
  19. You do know you are paying for that $30 flu shot.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh, that is funny...of course take the second shot, lkie CC says rake in the dough.

    ReplyDelete
  21. haha in college...whatever it takes to get some money...lol....and nice on the old man schooling the college kid too...smiles.

    ReplyDelete
  22. It reminds me of when I was in college and would go visit the local blood bank to sell a 'pint or two' for extra beer money....

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh I love it! Just proves that "out of the mouths of babes" doesn't just mean little ones. Love Di ♥

    ReplyDelete
  24. To funny. Hope she didn't get the shot.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh, those extra college dollars . . . glad hubby and child returned unscathed from the basketball match-up. Your story made me smile!
Thanks for sharing, Annmarie, and blessings to you!

  26. SO interesting to get into the mind of college students. Glad your daughter asked you before her friend got another flu shot!

  27. Ahhh how this sounds like some of our discussions about "school money" - good thing she can still work at the store 'cause my daughter HATES needles - no incentive would be enough for her!

Thanks for stopping by my blog and for following. I am one of your "newest" followers as well.

  29. lol I spent my entire career with college students -- gotta love them.

  30. My husband is not the sporty type -- but he is type who loves climbing up on roofs and doing all kinds of other manual work that needs doing if one does the upkeep of the home oneself. But now that he is 71 I worry about him doing all this physical stuff. At the same time I know it's a good sign he's still up to doing it! What a conundrum. As to insisting he not do something -- that would just spur him on!!

  31. I supposed your husband is exercising more than your son. Hi hi. I dont exercise much and i know many older than me who has better stamina than i have.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Never heard of being paid to have a flu shot before. When i was at school you were told you were having a needle no ifs or buts. Only good thing to come out of it was that you got a free lolly after.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh my word, that is hilarious!!! What did you tell her? (inquiring minds want to know!)

    ReplyDelete
  34. LOL! We were there though, once. I mean the age. Remember!?!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I am a freshman, in class with kids half my age and I love it. How they think and act like they know everything reminds me of myself... I would've taken the shots again at that age for sure!

Thanks for dropping by my blog :)

  36. Wow. My MUCH younger brother is 22, and it's like we live on different planets. He once expressed his surprise that I know how to text "at my age." Whaa..???

    ReplyDelete
  37. Lol. I just smile sweetly and nod when my teens speak... Although I did tell one this morning to expect his friends (ahem...) to be 'young and stupid' until they're about 30.

    ReplyDelete
  38. "more used to it"???? yikes, we should all be experts and top athletes by now, heee heee heee. love the thinking, though.

    ReplyDelete
  39. LOL, this sounds almost like the Cosby show "Kids say the darndest things!" I guess college kids are no exception!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think it really depend on the person, what's their character is like, personality is, can't judge one students to assume the whole population of them. :D

  41. hmm, I would say probably not a good idea. But if you can't do stupid stuff in college then when can you?

    ReplyDelete
  42. I love the flu shot story! I was forvever phoning home in university with questions like how to make a mustard plaster etc. (Do people still use those?) It is nice to know that kids are still relying on their folks for info.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Bahahaha...I am dying to know what you told her. The fact that your children come to you is a testimony of your relationship. Thank you so much for leaving a comment the other day.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ha! A $30 incentive? I have to pay $40 to get it. Wow! My husband is an avid basketball player. We've run the gauntlet with broken bones and sprains. It is a dangerous sport. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  45. As perplexing as that question might be to some, it should be scary what money will make some people do ... like experience the pain of another shot, not to mention possible side effects. I hope he opted to go mow a lawn or flip a burger instead!

    ReplyDelete
  46. wow. that's quite a amount $30 for a flu shot.
we have to pay to get one here.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Annmarie... I'm not sure that I'd ever want to get inside the mind of a college student...at least until their senior year. I'd avoid getting inside their room at college as well. That reflects their mind and can be very scary! Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  48. They really pay people to get a flu shot? Had no idea. Glad the college kid/school kid days are over for me! Have a great day. :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm glad dad could hang and sis is quite the wheeler dealer. An extra $30 ROCKS.

    ReplyDelete
  50. everyone has their own perspective huh :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. I can totally relate. My kids are at this same stage now. They continue to keep me laughing. It's the only thing I can do!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. This is genius thinking. Hurts way less than donating plasma - but plasma is needed, so it's a toss up. Hope you caught the sarcasm in my writing. :)

    Happy seeing beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Guaranteed: the school is not paying for the shot - a drug company is because the shot is experimental & unproven. They're paying people to participate in a study.

I did it when I was in college myself.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I wouldn't have minded getting 30 dollars for getting my shot...LOL My grandson thinks just like your college kids...Love it.

    ReplyDelete
  55. How funny! It's just proof that they're not fully mature yet!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Oh, wow! That is clever! Of course it's not necessarily smart, but it is clever!

  60. I literally just laughed out loud. The flu shot story was great! I wish I could cash in on an incentive. I already planned on getting the flu shot.

Thanks for stopping by Simply Sarah Style.

  61. Oh man, who will save them from themselves? Let's hear it for medical records.
I love the idea that dad has the upper hand, lol.

  63. LOL I needed that laugh. I had been feeling pretty grumpy. Hahhaha. cute kids.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Well, why not? Double the flu protection, right? I love college logic...

  65. I love the fact that they called you to ask!! :)

  66. Annmarie, I was just thinking tonight how my oldest daughter, who is in college, recently set down a few rules on what she would and wouldn't do to help out while she's living at home and commuting to college.

I just smiled to myself and thought, "She'll understand what she really said in another 25 years after she has kids who head off to college and say the same things to her...."

    Fun post!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Oh 51 has experience and unfortunately old bones:).
I am sure being the Mom you are I can guess the answer you gave your daughter:) NO! B

    ReplyDelete
  68. And now I've read your post. So reminds me of my son's college days. They start out with such know-it-all ideas. Four years of college generally cures that and then grad school seals the deal. Have fun enjoying this second ride with your son.

    ReplyDelete
  69. so funny about getting the flu shot again for that $.

  70. Hello,
I did not realize basketball is such a rough and contact sports.
The last story made me laugh!!
    Have a wonderful week!

  71. It is difficult for us men as we get older to remember we are not 21 when we get involved in a sport especially one that we were used to when we were younger. I went back to mine and within 2 weeks pulled a muscle in one leg, after recovery went back and did the same in the other leg.............

And I am impressed with the college system teaching the students to be entrepreneurs.......:)

    ReplyDelete
  72. Morning Anna Marie,
Thanks for stopping by, and for your sweet comment, so good to hear from you hon.
Loved your post...........aren't kids just a hoot...........
Just like Art Linkletter used to say "kids really do say the darndest things, but they don't have to be under 10 to say it!! lol
Hope all is well with you and yours,
    Blessings, Nellie

  73. Oh know all this too well...too funny. Recently we had our son, only married 7 years, tell us how we needed to run our 32 year marriage...of course he doesn't have kids yet, but someone he is the expert

Yes, freezing that basil this week

  74. Reminds me of a question I would have called my mom for back in the day lol. The things that will entice broke youth to get a few extra dollars in their pockets. Too funny!

    ReplyDelete
  75. With such entrepreneurship thriving in the younger generation, the future of the western economies is looking rosy!

    ReplyDelete
  76. My hubby plays basketball with his boys, too, and also with the young adults in his congregation at church. He is a little gimpy the next day but refuses to stop!

As for the flu shot question, this made me chuckle out loud.

    =D

    ReplyDelete
  77. Thanks for following my blog! I'm now following back!

    ReplyDelete
  78. I laughed at both of these! I'm sure your husband was somewhat pleased (at least) that your college age son thinks his dad is that tough and in great shape at age 51!

I hope other kids don't try to get 2 flu shots! I'd think the med center (or whoever) would keep track of who has already had a flu shot recently.

  80. I have a 19 y/o college student home from fall break this weekend...yup, teenage boys are entertaining :)

    ReplyDelete
  81. Well it's great that they are giving the kids the incentive to get the flu shot. However your daughter has raised a point to you that maybe many of the kids won't think to raise...just get the shot a second time. I think a lot of them would rationalise that you can never be too immune. Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to raise a bit of awareness about this to the college health centre as I think many of the kid will have this idea.

    ReplyDelete
  82. At least they checked with you. :-) And what could be so wrong with extra-immunity. One shot lasts them 6 months, an extra one will boost the immunity to 12, and they get an extra $30. to boot. What's not to like? ;-)
