Overheard Conversations At The Gym

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving, I was at the point in To Kill A Mockingbird, where the jury begins to deliberate. I was not going to get any further in this book if I stayed home. Too many people asking me questions. So I went to the gym and scouted the most isolated cardio machine in the place. No one was anywhere near me. I read and exercised happily for 6 minutes. Another woman comes up beside me, and starts happily exercising also. Just then, a man walks up to her, leans on the machine and says, "Hey! How you been? What's this I hear about you getten a divorce?" She says it's true. He says he couldn't believe it, he thought he was so nice and took good care of her. She said, "Oh, yea, he was nice. He just had too many secrets." The man asked, "What kind of secrets?" She explained how she didn't know about his other name, and when all of this mail was being delivered to the house, she thought something was strange. Oh, the man definitely understood why she would wonder about that, and was there anything else?  She then went on to tell him, "And I didn't know nothing about another marriage. When his 3 kids showed up at the door, I said what are you saying?" The man was very interested in her situation and wanted to talk and talk. I realized I was not going to finish my book if I stayed next to this conversation, so I picked up my stuff and moved to another spot and did not hear more revealed secrets. None of my business anyway. But I was distracted and kept thinking her marriage would make a good book club read that I could be reading at the gym.

  3. It is constantly amazing to me that people marry without taking anytime to get to know one another. But, it would be a great book club read. <3 To Kill a Mockingbird.

  4. Wow, what a conversation to overhear! And, would that ever creep me out to have those things start to happen in my home. We have been married for 16 years, and to this date, there has never been strange mail coming to our home, whoo! hoo! I'm married to a boring guy, and guess what?! I will take boring ANY day, thank you very much!

  6. Truth is indeed stranger than fiction. Sad though, how it seems that so many men mistreat women - but it is because women like her allow it!! I say just put your foot down and challenge the men, there are good ones out there.

  7. Now that's crazy! I love that book, makes me want to read it again!

  9. haha....oh my i should not laugh but people seriously make me wonder sometimes...and i wonder how many marriages the guy had....would def make for an interesting book....

  10. I thought those things only happened in movies and on TV. Several TV shows lately have had episodes where women start showing up to claim the same body of their husband, boyfriend, or fiance. I hope you got to finish your book

  11. To Kill A Mockingbird is one of my all time favourite books, I've read it 3 times and seen it at the theatre once (the only play to ever make me cry) and last year my son studied it for his English literature exams - enjoy it!

  12. I love To Kill a Mockingbird too. I have the movie, but have never watched it (yet). It's funny how hard it gets to find a spot to read isn't it?

  15. Poor woman. :( This same scenario happened to my cousin. :(( She was married to a wonderful man and had a beautiful son by him only to find out that he was married to another lady and had 5 children by her plus he had multiple girl friends. :(( Such a nasty, horrible situation that took her and her son years to get over.

    Blessings,

  17. Very cleaver post! I thought you were going to have some sort of tie in to the "jury still out on that" conclusion. hahaha. how many times have your read, "To Kill a Mockingbird"? Oh about 20 here.........love it!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Wow, that's nuts! But, I'm with Stephen. Would love to know the rest of the story lol. I guess I am nosy like that though :S

  19. Wow that is some juicy stuff. I wonder if the guy was seeming concerned because he wanted to move in on a newly divorced woman.

  20. I would have kept listening. Like not being able to look away from an accident. I figure if it was a private conversation they shouldn't have been having it so loudly in public. But, you are right, it definitely would make a good read.

  21. AMC here in the states aired the movie To Kill A Mockingbird. I watched it from beginning to end. Loved it as much as the first time I watched it.
Yes, gym conversation would make a good lifetime movie!

  22. Normally, I hate being disturbed by other gym goers...but, if I heard that conversation I would of leaned in and tried to capture every salacious detail. Holy Moly, there are real people that are married to guys with a 2nd family. OMG...a soap opera for real.

I respect that you acknowledged that it wasn't your business..that wouldn't of stopped me from listening.

  23. To Kill A Mockingbird is one of my favourite books. It was the only book that Harper Lee ever published and it's considered a classic. That conversation at the gym is shocking!

  28. Had to write a book review on To Kill A Mocking Bird in high school was a good book back then, must reread it one day. Those two people in the gym sound like very shady characters to me.

  29. She should have done a background check!

  40. Sounds like a good Lifetime movie or an episode of Jerry Springer!

  41. The things you find out at the gym...

    ReplyDelete
  42. It does sound like a book you could be reading at the gym! Makes you happy for a less complicated life. :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Not the kind of conversation I want to enjoy while doing my gym routine. It's a good thing you decided to move to another spot.

    ReplyDelete
  44. GOOD HEAVENS! Didn't they know you could hear them?? Didn't she care?? I would have been humiliated if I had been her and not at the gym spilling my guts in front of strangers. Yikes!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Her story does sound like it could be a book... or Lifetime movie! lol

    ReplyDelete
  46. LOL!!! Sounds like she could have written her own novel!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I have to admit that I might have kept listening in on that crazy story. The book will keep.

I can't read and be on the treadmill at the same time anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'd say you got more than you bargained for at your gym. Maybe you can write the story?
I read To Kill a Mocking Bird a few months ago. A rather powerful story

  54. OMG, that is so funny! I remember reading To Kill a Mockingbird in high school... I also remember how the teacher wanted us to perform bits and pieces of the trial part for the class. It was very embarrassing for a socially inept girl like me hahaha.

  55. oh too funny. funnier still if you one day find yourself reading her book on the treadmill, sort of. =)

  59. Annmarie, Real life can be as crazy and twisted as fiction. While on a flight, I had the woman sitting next to me tell me all about her physically abusive husband and his girlfriends. In your case, I can't believe that the woman openly aired her problems...not just for her mail acquaintance but also for anyone else who might be listening! Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  60. Boy, that drama almost rivals "To Kill a Mockingbird."

But I think you made the right choice...

  64. I often wonder why people so blatantly talk about there private business in public and on social networks when it can be done privately and discreetly. I am ashamed of nothing...but it is my business not open to gossips

    ReplyDelete
  65. I am sure my life is very dull in comparison......thank goodness!

  70. To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my all time favorites! The conversation you overheard reminded me of when I was in high school a girlfriend and I went out to eat one weekend...we got to overhear the whole conversation of a girl dropping the bomb that she was pregnant and him debating whether it was his or not. It was SO awkward to say the least.
