Just Another Day Off From School

Presidents day. Kids everywhere. So before they even woke up their chore list was prepared and waiting. My son tackled the fireplace first thing, because he wanted his friends over to play. He yelled upstairs, "Where should I put the bucket of ashes?" I told him leave the bucket in the garage for now. A few minutes later I heard him and his younger brother kind making some sort of commotion. Someone came to get me and said, "The shop vac is smoking." I said what?  He said" It's smoking from both ends. I think there might be something wrong with it." Here's a picture of what's wrong with the shop vac when the ashes just swept into it are smoldering:

  11. Oy!! Boys. Glad you caught that one.
My son is the same. Last week he vacuumed up a hot coal with the central vac! Good thing I was right there when he did it and I quickly went to the basement and empty out the vac container. And just yesterday he vacuumed up cat puke with the shop vac. :s

  12. omg...well at least they were trying right....dang...ha...sounds like something my boys would do...lol

  14. Yikes, what a weird thing to happen!!!! Will you be able to fix it or do you need a new one?

  15. well he learned about smoldering embers. He'll never not put them out again.

    I've done something similar myself.

  16. Well, that would be a great big OOPS! Poor kids, it probably scared them to death! :)

  17. Oh my!!! At least the kid did his chores :)

  18. Ee! Now I know why the idea of sweeping up those ashes leaves a big 'no,no' in my mind. Glad all survived ;)

  23. Time for a new vac...but I agree with some of the others, at least your boys were trying to be helpful.

  24. Oops! That's some expensive ash clean up.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ah, I bet you wanted to kick some ash after that happened...

  26. I'm glad a fire didn't break out and that all is well at your house.

    ReplyDelete
  27. That will teach you. Always give them a DETAILED list of instructions... Looking on the bright side, at least it was only the ShopVac that burned up!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oops! Hope there was no serious damage.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Sounds like yours have the same bit of a destructive streak that mine do. Oops!

  30. Annmarie, Another 'life event' for your family... It is amazing how common sense just doesn't kick in sometimes. We are all vulnerable! I personally don't have mechanical or 'handy' bone in my body. I burned up the engine on my first car because I had no clue that you had to change the oil! I just kept replacing it instead...not a good thing... Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  31. Just love reading your blog Annmarie, always makes me smile and always makes me think. This one is just too classic.

  35. Thank goodness they came to get you and no one was hurt.

  36. It's a good thing he noticed that smoke! Now you can look back on it and laugh, right? I must admit that I laughed. One time I threw ashes from our charcoal BBQ grill up on the bank that slopes down to our house. I hadn't realized they were still hot from the chicken I'd just cooked. They didn't look hot. It took quite a few minutes, but after awhile the young man who was replacing our old deck heard a crackling sound and went around the house to investigate it and saw the bank of dead grass and ground cover was burning. Jerry calls that day, "The day Pat tried to burn the house down." The guys got two hoses on it right away and put it out. I learned my lesson well.

  37. Ahh kids, you gotta love'em! Take care, Sheila

  38. oh no! At least, it was only the vacuum cleaner that got hurt. But kudos to your kids for the initiative if not for prudence. :-)

  39. This could have ended much, much worse than with that picture of the shop vac...

Tell your son that he's lucky his allowance money only has to buy a new shop vac and not a new house. LOL.

  40. Scary!! Glad everyone is okay! Also - Pleased to meet you :) -Tammy

  41. You didn't want them to work on their day off did you?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh no, it's a darn good thing it happened in the garage. Well at least the fireplace is cleaned out.

  43. Annmarie,
That's so funny and I'm sure he'll remember to see if they're hot the next time...

  44. that's never a good sign. That, and when children are quiet during daylight hours!

  45. That is not good. Maybe should have been a little more precise about how to do that task.

  47. Oh no! The old PA Dutch saying comes to mind...Haste makes waste =)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yikes...this could have been a post about not having a garage....KIDS :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Too funny but I'm glad there were no bigger problems than the poor vac.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Whoa! Could have been tragic! My 'big kid' (husband) dumped the ashes on the compost pile. The cats thought this would be great for a new litter box. They tracked ashes all over my newly stained deck. The footprints never did come out. Hope your shop vac is salvageable! xx

    ReplyDelete
  51. Eeeh, I bet that doesn't smell nice either;)

    ReplyDelete
  52. I felt bad when I vacuumed up a quarter!

I'm so glad everything turned out ok! I'm always thankful for the little lessons that teach us about the consequences of what we do-so we can learn our lesson without complete calamity occurring:)

  53. I'm glad that nothing caught fire!!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I've heard some very SERIOUS stories of fires started from smoldering ashes (I'm sure you have, too). Thankful this was the only damage you sustained.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Ouch, lol. I am glad no one was injured or anything worst happened.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Well, they will only do that one once! Thank heavens. Glad no one was hurt!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Glad to know that it [fire] did not spread. That could have been so much worse. You can replace a shop vac but not memories lost in a fire.
