Our New Security System

He's been a family member about 7 months. 5:15 am today while we were in a state of blissful sleep, the howling started. My husband ran downstairs to see what the heck was going on. The barking stopped and my husband came back to bed. I asked him what the problem was and he told me the neighbor put their artificial Christmas tree in the garbage and the dog thought it was a person standing in front of our house. I asked, "So what did you do?" He told me he told Herc (our dog) it was not a person it was a tree. To me too, at this time of day, this sounded like the perfect solution, clarifying things to a dog. As soon as my husband got back in bed, the growling started again. My husband again jumped out of bed and repeated the explanation to the dog, that it was a tree in the garbage not a stalker casing the house. By this time the kids were awake and came downstairs to see the cause of the commotion. My one son said I'll just take Herc to see the tree. So he put on his boots and threw his coat over his jammies and took the dog to see the artificial tree that was in the garbage. It is like 9 degrees and barely light. The dog sniffed the tree and the rest of the garbage. They came back in. My son went to hang up his coat and the dog went back to the window, looked outside and saw the tree and started growling. Oh my gosh! We ended up taking Herc to another part of this house by bribing him with treats and comfy pillows so he forgot about the peeping tom that was a tree. You know, it is always something, isn't it?!

  1. Ahahahaha! We just got a rescue dog and we are trying to get him to not bark when he hears the neighbors (not an easy feat when you live in the city)! This cracked me up, because I don't know how many "rational" conversations I've had with that dog, because I don't know what else to do. Sometimes, I think I'd be better equipped to rear human offspring!!!

  2. Hector is only doing what he's suppose to do, protect those he loves. I certainly hope the garbage man comes soon, so Hector can get some rest!!!

  3. A wonderful story, like your previous ones.

Dogs can really be a very good security guard that warns us and scare bad people.

  4. One of our rescue dogs is my beloved Boston terrier, Buddha. He is a darling and bravely patrols the boundaries of the back garden whilst barking ferociously to warn off any would-be intruders. He's a fearless killer of tennis balls and stalker (and gobbler) of the wild treat BUT, like all Bostons, he has a problem with, well, gas.

Unlike most Bostons, however, when a breath of bad air escapes from behind he runs through the house whining; he's afraid of his gas attacks!!

  6. Love it! It was a perfect solution to show the dog the tree. :) You have very smart children and dogs.

Our dogs are an intricate part of the security system here, too.

  9. That is so funny. I am the same way. I can have a conversation with our pets as if they know what I am saying. I'm sure in their minds they are like "what in the world is this crazy lady trying to say to me". The best part is that they still listen to me and NEVER roll their eyes when I say something they don't like! :)

  10. Now that is stinkin' hilarious...what I love the most is how much you validate Herc...he deserves it!

  11. Clearly, Herc is barking up the wrong tree.

    1. You are a funny dude! Thanks for the laugh!
PS It wouldn't be a problem in our house, we're up at 5AM. Out walking the dogs this morning at 5:30 : )

  12. Maybe Herc had that outcome in mind all along...

  13. I would rather a tree be peeping than a real person.

  14. Hahaha ! A very good alarm system ! Imagine if it hadn't been a Christmas tree, but a man stuck in the garbage !

  15. I laughed out loud reading this today. Poor disillusioned Herc! Hey you do have comfort in knowing he's a good alert system. So what did you make for breakfast since everyone was awake?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Whose a good boy ... Herc's a good boy! Really, that's his way of sayin' you are part of his pack, he loves you, and he saw a "threat" and wanted you to know about it. A bit annoying perhaps when it's a christmas tree, but greatly appreciated if it was anything more "menacing".

  17. Sounds you have a great alert dog. :) The trick is to teach him that the tree will not fire pine needles at you.

    Blessings,

  18. Haha Cute story! Not so "cute" though while it's happening! Hope you all got some sleep!

  19. I remember a few years ago when our lab barked for days at the water dripping off the roof in spring as the snow melted. I thought I would go crazy! But we still love her. :)

  20. I'm only laughing because we have a 16-month-old beagle who has the best hearing of any animal I've ever seen. She knows if someone or something walks through the yard...even with the doors and windows closed. I also seem to catch myself "explaining" things to her!

  21. Annmarie! I thought of doing exactly what your son did. Dang, silly doggies.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Maybe Herc wanted to mark his territory? You have a patient husband.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I love that your husband and son were patient enough to try to explain the logistics of a tree vs. a person. How sweet of them to at least try to reassure Herc.

  24. Oh I love dog stories. We have three dogs. Our youngest one we allowed to sleep in our laundry room when he was a puppy and early when my husband got up, he would let him outside with the other two. Finally as he grew up, we decided even though he was a "good" dog, he should graduate to his outside box. There are times at night he will yip and yip. I think he is scared and wants to come back in to the laundry room.

  25. hahaha I hate when my dog sees stuff and it freaks her out. Your son is amazing for taking him out to check it out!

  26. Haha! So funny. It really is always something. :)

  27. We have two of those dogs. When Iam in the kitchen at night we have to put them in the den. They will go off every time they see my reflection on the glass of the front door. I just can't get it into they heads that it's me.

  28. Aren't the antics of our pets just the strangest? They probably think the same about us. Really enjoying your blog. And I have to admit, it's a treat to read your no nonsense writing. Please visit me sometime.

  31. Goodness!! I would have thought for sure that he would stop after sniffing the tree! Well, you sure have a great guard dog!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hahaha! Oh my gosh, this made me laugh. :D It's good to know he's looking out for you.

    ReplyDelete
  33. That is funny. My dog goes in to home defense mode only when my husband isn't home. She leaves it to him when he is there...

    ReplyDelete
  34. ha...at least he was trying...not just laying there as the robbers broke in...even if it was a tree...smiles.

  39. Ha! Logic and Dogs obviously are not compatible! :)

  40. Quite an eventful and too-early morning for all! At least you know Herc is a good and faithful watchdog. :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. He's a protective member of your family. I'll trade you. Mine only picks fights with other animals. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  42. Annmarie, Pets rule! Only 7 months and he's the focus of the family... Our cat tells us when its time to go to bed, when he wants to play and when he wants to go out on the screened in porch. He's even been knows to stare at my wife until she puts his favorite blanket over her lap so he can sleep comfortably. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  43. Good dog! Sorry about the whole no sleep thing :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. My dog is the same way. Too bad they can't tell the difference between something that is a threat and something that isn't.

  45. Thanks for visiting my blog. I look forward to getting to know you through your blog. Have a blessed day, Lisa :O)

  46. You have a good watch dog there. He sounds like he is protective.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Good for your alarm dog. I feel a lot less secure without my dog. I know the cat would just save herself and not even warn us of danger.

    ReplyDelete
  48. You're right, it is always something, but at least Herc sounds like one heck of a watch dog!

  49. That's funny! Puppy dogs are the Best!

  56. LOL!! Tooooooo funny!!! Our dog still barks when a door bell goes off on the TV! :)

  57. That IS a great story. And I love what your son did. Too bad it didn't work.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Oh, how funny! We call our dogs our security system too......we had some big branches down after a storm and one of our little dogs went crazy barking at the "thing".

  60. LOL!
We have the same problem here at our house. But, thankfully once we tell Molly it is a tree, garbage can or rock. She seems to get it.

  62. That is such a cute story!!! And what a wonderful son you have to volunteer to take your dog out to get acquainted with the tree when it's 9 degrees out!!! This will make a great story as the years pass.

    ReplyDelete
  63. i would have done the same thing as your son. Herc is in a good home.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Our dogs did the same thing when I put our live table top tree outside. It was better than the time when our artificial table top was being stored in the basemant on the floor. Our dog went up to it, lifted up his leg and did his business.

  65. Reminds me of a funny I saw on Pinterest. It was a photo of a dog set up like that Dos Equis commercial guy. The caption read- I don't always bark at night, but when I do, it's at nothing at all.

Yep, my dogs do that too!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Sounds like he is doing his job :)

  73. You have some very interesting things happen in your world!! That had to have been funny while it was happening despite your sleepy state of minds.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Hmmmm... Are you sure he didn't want to use the tree for a bathroom?
    LOL

  75. I understand this so well our dog does not like when a car parks across the road which of course they are entitled to do. He barks non stop drives us crazy. They have funny little quirks.

  76. This is the story of my life right now!!! I have two kids and a dog, but it often feels like I have triplets! If it's not one of the kids screaming or crying, it's the dog who's barking, whining to go out to pee, or sometimes vomiting all over the carpet! I didn't sign up for two in diapers and a dog with a sensitive tummy! lol! I swear most mornings, it's the DOG that wakes us up before the kids!! Thank goodness the grandparents take him every week for a few days or so to give us a "break" (from the dog?!!!) Sad but true!
