The Silver Lining

This week was my turn to host the neighborhood ladies...always a fun night, and always only ladies. That means my husband had to take the 4 boys and stay out of the house till about 10, when he would be allowed to reenter. This time was a little different though, he had to take the dog, and my son who is on crutches. They all went to Target, to spend those gift cards that were burning holes in their pants. My husband wanted to give the dog some exercise, so dropped the boys off while he parked and walked the dog. As soon as my husband walked inside the store he saw a younger son holding the crutches. A little bit of panic. "Why do you have the crutches? What! Where is David? He is not allowed to put any weight on that leg! He could disrupt all the healing! How is he getting around?" Guess where he was? Finally, he got to ride those motorized carts. Everyone of these kids shopping had their eyes on those vehicles since they were toddlers and would ask me every time we went into a store, "Can I try it?"  The answer was always no...and now after 16 years with no parent around and legitimate crutches, this one got his chance. Like my daughter pointed out to me, boys never really grow up...they just get bigger.

  1. Ha ha ha ha! That is true about boys. They'll launch bicycles off roofs if they had the chance.

  5. patience...sometimes...more often these days...I get to do and have all the things I ever wanted to do and have...just 50 years later...but in God's eyes? just a moment in time and for sure..the perfect time! He won't forget it now as he might of when he was little.

  6. I had to ride in one of those once because of a broken leg. I was so embarrassed, but that's just me...

  7. When my boys were 4 and 14 I often said the only difference in them is the size!

  8. Very cool!!!! I ride these all the time and my only complaint is that stores never have enough, at times I have to either wait in the car or leave and return again later.

  9. That's better than spending those pants-burning-holes vouchers -- or did he do that too? ;-)

  10. Your daughter nailed it! Truly, the man never quite outgrows the boy. :)

  11. Annmarie, Life is funny isn't it. When you're young, you want to ride around on one of those motorized carts cause it would be fun! At my age, they represent another marker in the downhill slide to the inevitable... I'm sure not in any hurry to ride on/use one of those things! Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  12. Two years before she died, my mom drove one of those scooters at a Kroger store. She had a great time; I had an anxiety attack watching her.

  14. Nothing wrong with retaining the mind of a child - no matter how old you are (and I'm 54!).

  15. Perhaps I should have my son try those... if I can ever get him to get dressed and out of the house.

  16. This is cute. My son who qualified for a handicapped parking sticker never wanted one. When he went to a junior college, we applied for one at the suggestion of a staff member.

  38. It's good to leave men in charge of kids alone from time to time, just to get them to appreciate your presence more!

  39. Brilliant. There's been so much invented for kids since I was one, I'd love to go back and try some of them. Bungee cord swings would come first.

  63. Hello! I saw your comment on my best friend's blog, and I decided to swing by to check out yours. I love the stories you put up about your children. I'm the second oldest of ten children, and I very much appreciate the chaos and beauty of a large family, as well as the frustration with some aspects of bureaucratic nonsense (that statement being in reference to another post of yours).

Thank you for being able to just say what you think, without traipsing about the bush looking for a large enough opening. It's very refreshing. I'm a new follower.

I'd love it if you would come and check out our blog as well.

    Cheers!
